As the cold weather settles in, I invite you to snuggle up with a hot beverage, some cozy yarn and a crochet hook and join a new crochet along!
The Midwinter Crochet Along will start on January 10, 2022 and will run for three weeks. During this time, I am excited to bring you nine (yes, nine!) new free crochet patterns all here on Rich Textures Crochet!
The patterns will include three twisted ear warmers, three hats and three cowls. The patterns will range in difficulty from easy to intermediate!

The Materials:
For each of the designs I will be using a yarn called Scarfie by Lion Brand Yarn. It is a super cozy bulky weight yarn that is an acrylic/wool blend yarn. You are welcome to use any bulky weight yarn that you love and I will give the stitch multiples for each pattern in case you need to change the stitch counts.
Along with the yarn, I will be using a 6.5 mm crochet hook. In the video tutorials you will see me using a wooden hook that my husband actually made for me. If you are interested in wooden crochet hooks, I recommend checking out the wooden streamline hooks by Furls Crochet – these ones I also love!
I’ll give you more detailed amounts for the yarn below!
How does the crochet along work?
This crochet along is free! All of the patterns will be posted in full here on my blog where they will remain free forever! Each pattern will also include a free video tutorial that you can find on each post, or by heading over to my YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/richtexturescrochet/
There is no sign-up for this crochet along other than to sign up for my email newsletters (this will also mean that you receive an email for each new pattern or stitch tutorial I post). You can sign up at the bottom of this page, or in the right hand side bar.

Below you will find a schedule of the upcoming patterns. Beside the pattern name, I will list the colour of Scarfie yarn I used and well as the quantity. Also remember you will need a 6.5mm crochet hook.
January 10: Glacier Ear Warmer, about 100 yards, shown in the colour mint/silver
January 12: Glacier Beanie, about 210 yards, shown in the colour mint/silver
January 14: Glacier Cowl, about 210 yarns, shown in the colour mint/silver
January 17: Black Cherry Ear Warmer, about 100 yards, shown in the colour Oxford/Claret
January 19: Black Cherry Beanie, about 210 yards, shown in the colour Oxford/Claret
January 21: Black Cherry Cowl, about 250 yards, shown in the colour Oxford/Claret
January 24: Feathers Ear Warmer, about 150 yards, shown in the colour cream/taupe
January 26: Feathers Beanie, about 250 yards, shown in the colour cream/taupe

There are so many CAL going on right now, I think I am involved in 4 of them, but this is the one I am most excited for! I love the look and feel of Scarfie yarn. Sadly, I ordered a bunch of skeins for Christmas gifts for my family and I ran out of time to make them. My own fault, my time management skills suck. See my first sentence. That and so far 3 of those skeins have been so tangled they were just about impossible to use. I couldn’t find the outer starting point or the inside starting point on one of the skeins until I unraveled the entire thing. The 2 ends were tangled together about three quarters of the way to the inner side of the yarn. It still left me with a tangle that I lost a good 25 yards out of the skein I had to cut. 2 days it took me to fight with that skein. I would have just thrown it away if I had had another in the same color, but I didn’t and my sister has been begging me for an earwarmer or a messy bun hat with that yarn. I’m praying I don’t have anything near that bad again when we start this. The color ways are simply gorgeous, not fussy like some of them can get, just nice, soft, fluffy yarn with soft color changes. Ah, now I have to go and play with the yarn again. Lol
Awe that’s too bad! I do also find the balls hard to work from – but I love the yarn so I struggle through! I’ve started starting from the outside and then I hand wind it into a ball right away. Otherwise, even if you start from the outside I feel like it eventually still flops into a mess lol – but again, it’s beautiful!
Yarn barf is my least favorite thing. I always think about how much crocheting I could be doing while untangling the yarn. But at least you have a sense of humor about it.

I love Scarfie yarn! I just finished 2 hats and am in the middle of a scarf by Jayda InStitches. I was hoping for more patterns using this yarn. I’m still new enough that I need to see projects made with particular yarn. I also use the Scarfie from the outside. I wind it into a cake first. I did one of your bags over the summer. You have beautiful patterns.

Hi Sarah, I just finished the first week of CAL and loving your videos and written patterns. I’m still a beginner. I’ve learned so much doing the herringbone stitch. Lots of errors and frogging but by the time I got to the cowl it was a breeze. It didn’t help that my yarn was black & gray.? Thank you for doing this and excited for Monday! It’s so easy to follow your videos. I had trouble with the chain twisting but found your video on no twisting. I will be using that method from now on. Have a great weekend!
