The Long Wave Stitch is a beautiful pattern! It is comprised of several basic stitches making it a pleasure to work.
Although it can be worked in a single colour, this Long Wave Stitch design really shines when worked in multiple colours.

When worked in even just two colours, the waves in the pattern become really apparent.
The waves in this stitch are created by lengthening and shortening the heights of your stitches. Therefore this pattern includes single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet and triple (aka treble) stitches.

Materials:
For this tutorial I will be using the Caron x Pantone yarn by Yarnspirations along with a 6 mm crochet hook. The hook shown here and in the video below is a wooden streamline hook by Furls Crochet. However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.

Long Wave Stitch:
This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial. At the end of each row you will need to chain 1 or 3 and turn your work. The chain 3 at the beginning of a row does count as a triple crochet stitch.
Don’t forget to check out the free video tutorial linked below!
To begin, using your colour A, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains. For this stitch pattern you will need multiples of 14 stitches plus 2 for your foundation chain.
For my swatch I will be making a foundation chain of 30 chain stitches.
Row One:
Once you have your desired number of chains, single crochet into the second chain from your hook.
Single crochet into the next stitch, half double crochet into each of the next 2 stitches, double crochet into each of the next 2 stitches, triple crochet into each of the next 3 stitches, double crochet into each of the next 2 stitches, half double crochet into each of the next 2 stitches, single crochet into each of the next 2 stitches.
Repeat the above paragraph all the way across your foundation chain.
Chain 1 and turn your work.

Row Two:
Single crochet into the first stitch and into each stitch all the way across.
Join your colour B in the last stitch. To join the new colour: With your colour A, insert your hook into the final stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop. Drop your colour A, pick up your colour B and place it on your hook. Draw a loop through. You will now be set to begin the next row in your colour B.
With colour B, chain 3 (counts as a triple crochet) and turn your work.

Row Three:
Triple Crochet into the next stitch, double crochet into each of the next 2 stitches, half double crochet into each of the next 2 stitches, single crochet into each of the next 3 stitches, half double crochet into each of the next 2 stitches, double crochet into each of the next 2 stitches, triple crochet into each of the next 2 stitches.
Repeat the above paragraph all the way across. Chain 1 and turn your work.

Row Four:
Single crochet into the first stitch and into each stitch all the way across. Change back to colour A in the final stitch.
Chain 1 and turn your work.

And that’s it!
For the rest of the pattern simple repeat rows 1 to 4 changing colours as needed. Fasten off and weave in your ends.

Long Wave Stitch Video Tutorial
Thank you so much for stopping by and I look forward to seeing you next week! Until then, happy crocheting!
Sarah
Thank you for the long wave pattern. I’ll be making several baby blankets using this stich pattern.
You’re welcome!
How Manny stitches for a blanket size to fit an adult. Can’t make my base chain come out
It will depend on the yarn and hook you are using. Using the stitch multiples provided simply chain to the desired length
I would like to try this wave pattern to make a blanket. I have watched your you tube and I’m excited to dive in. I have taught myself to crochet blankets using you tube and I usually run into problems when it is time to add a border. Your instructions do not include a border. Do you have a recommendation on how to complete the pattern to make a blanket with a border?
Hi. Can you tell me how much yarn I would need for this project please and thanks.
So when you are doing the repeats of rows 1-4. Would you place the first sc in the 2nd ch from hook and do 2 sc’s or just 1? I have done thru row 4 so this will be my first set of repeats I am in LOVE with this pattern.
Hi Linda. I am just as confused as you are. I hope you get a reply.
Put the sc in the first stitch
I love this stitch but am confused. When doing repeats of rows 1-4 would you place the first sc in the 2nd ch from hook and then just do one more sc? I’ve frogged so many times with my swatch and the rows are not working out for me. Please help!
How do we get answers
Love this stitch, working on a blanket now and it’s beautiful ?? Question…how would I go about finishing so that the top and bottom have a straight edge, to fill in the wave?
Hi was there an answer for a good border on this blanket?
why havent you answered the questions how to proceed after row 4? its confusing the way you described in the video. you say to repeat row 1. but row 1 says to sc in 2nd ch from hook and then another sc. so do we do 1 sc in that very first st and then another one? please answer or change your tutorial. Otherwise, this is a great pattern.
I made this as a baby blanket for my sisters first grand baby. Her colors were “mermaid” so I did a chart to use and mirrored the colors and repeated until I got the length desired. It looks really great and they love it! I used Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek Low-Pill Fiber yarn and it’s very soft. I can send you a picture if you’d like to see it. ?
For sure! I would love to see it!
Hi Sarah, I love your pattern and am using it to make a scarf for a friend. I’ve completed the first 4 rows, but am now confused. I’ve chained one at the end of the 4th row and turned my work. Now do I do 2 single crochets and on which stitch do I begin?
Why does there need to be a row of sc after every wave row?
There may not need to be depending on the look you are going for. This was simply the design I used
