The Construction:

Our crochet cowl today is worked as one piece from the bottom up.  The pattern is worked in rounds and features rows of bobble stitches that are spaced between rows of half double crochet stitches that are worked in the third loop.  If you are intimidated by the third loop or the bobble stitches, do not worry! I have a free video tutorial following the written pattern below that will walk you through the steps.

The Materials:

For this crochet beanie pattern I will be using approximately 300 yards of the Scarfie Yarn by Lion Brand.  It is shown above in the colour Oxford/Claret.  I will also be using a 6.5 mm crochet hook.

The Black Cherry Cowl:

Skill Level: Easy

Gauge: 12 sts x 12 rows of hdc in 3rd = 4 inches

Finished Size: 9.5 x 15 inches laid flat – to fit an adult with drape.

Yarn: Scarfie ® by Lion Brand ® (78% Acrylic, 22% Wool; 5.3 oz, 150 g; Approx. 312 yds, 285 m). Bulky Weight (5). 3/4 ball.  Colour Shown is Claret/Oxford

Hook: Size K/10.5 (6.5 mm) Hook. Adjust hook size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.

Notions: Yarn Needle.

 

Stitches and Abbreviations:

Bobble – Bobble Stitch ([Yarn over and insert your hook into the stitch indicated, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through two loops] five times.  Yarn over and pull through all loops on your hook.)

Ch – Chain

Dc – Double Crochet

Hdc – Half Double Crochet 

Rpt – Repeat

Sc – Single Crochet

Sl St – Slip Stitch

Yo – Yarn Over

 

Pattern Notes:

  • Pattern is written in American English terms.
  • Pattern is worked in rounds.
  • Do not turn at the end of each round UNLESS stated otherwise
  • Ch 1 at the beginning does not count as a stitch.
  • Weave in ends as needed.
  • To change the size of your cowl, you will need a multiple of 4 for your foundation chain.

 

Free Crochet Pattern:

Ch 92, join with a sl st in the first st to make a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, Hdc in the same ch as joining and in each st around, join with a sl st in the first st.  Ch 1, do not turn.  (92 sts)

Rnds 2-4: Working in the 3rd loops, hdc in each st around, join with a sl st in the first st.  Ch 1, do not turn until the end of round 4.

Rnd 5: *Sc in each of the next 3 sts, bobble in the next st; rpt from * around.  Join with a sl st in the first st.  Ch 1, turn.

Rnd 6: Hdc in each st around, join with a sl st in the first st.  Ch 1, do not turn.

Rnds 7-8: Working in the 3rd loop, hdc in the next st and in each st around, join with a sl st in the first st.  Ch 1, do not turn until the end of round 4. 

Repeat rounds 5-8 four more times.

Next Round: Working in the 3rd loop, hdc in the next st and in each st around, join with a sl st in the first st.  

Fasten off, weave in your ends.
