The River Stone Beanie crochet pattern uses a wonderful textured crochet stitch called the slip stitch cluster stitch pattern.

But don’t let the mention of “slip stitches” deter you! When the slip stitches are worked as part of this cluster stitch, they are much more pleasing to work into and no where near as daunting!

I first encountered this slip stitch cluster crochet stitch pattern not too long ago and fell in love! It has a beautiful, thick texture that is the same on both sides (although you will not see the reverse in this pattern).

Because of its thick texture, it is a pleasure to wear, especially in winter accessories! I worked a matching hat and cowl using the same stitch back in my Wonderful Hats Crochet Along. You may also wish to check out the Hill Beanie and Hill Neck Warmer crochet patterns!

How to crochet the River Stone Beanie:

For this hat you will use about 200 yards of a worsted/medium weight yarn. I will be using the yarn called Heatherly by KnitPicks and WeCrochet in a single colour along with a 5 mm crochet hook.

This particular crochet hat pattern is sized to fit an adult head, however I will provide some instruction in the pattern notes should you wish to change the size. It is worked from the bottom up which is my favourite way to crochet a hat. It gives it a lovely shape!

You will begin by working the brim of the hat in rows. I prefer to work my hat brims with slip stitches, but you may wish to use single crochet or half double crochet instead.

Next, once the brim is complete you will continue into the body of the hat which is worked in rounds. Here you will primarily work slip stitch clusters.

The texture will be worked throughout the hat to the top where you may add an optional pompom. The pompom you see here in my photos is a faux fur pompom by Wooly Knits and Crochet on Etsy.
