The crochet Walnut Stitch is a variation of the popular Almond Stitch.  The differences in this stitch is that there is a slightly deeper texture and the ridges are wider apart.

This stitch is constructed in a similar way to the Almond Stitch (Sometimes called the Almond Ridges Stitch) in that it is worked using primarily slip stitches and half double crochet stitches.  These stitches are worked in the black loop or the front loop only which gives the stitch it’s texture.  The resulting fabric is solid with deep ridges of texture that is similar on both sides.  This stitch would work well in a variety of projects including crochet sweaters, blankets, scarves and hats.

Materials for this Tutorial:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Pima Cotton Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn in a single colour. It is a worsted weight yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm birchwood crochet hook by Rowan Yarns.  However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose, even experiment with colour!

Notes:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial. You may work the stitch in one colour or many.  I will be working the design in a solid colour.

To begin, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you will need a multiple of eight plus five stitches for your foundation chain (8+5).

For example, ch 29.

Row One:

Slip stitch in the second chain from your hook and in each of the next three stitches, *half double crochet in each of the next four stitches, slip stitch in each of the next four stitches.  Repeat from * across.  Chain one and turn your work.

Row Two:

Working in the back loop only all the way across, slip stitch in each of the first four stitches, *half double crochet in each of the next four stitches, slip stitch in each of the next four stitches.  Repeat from * across.  Chain one and turn your work.

Row Three:

Working in the front loop only all the way across, slip stitch in each of the first four stitches, *half double crochet in each of the next four stitches, slip stitch in each of the next four stitches.  Repeat from * across.  Chain one and turn your work.

Rows Four and Five:

Working in the back loop only all the way across, Half double crochet in each of the first four stitches, *slip stitch in each of the next four stitches, half double crochet in each of the next four stitches.  Repeat from * across.  Chain one and turn your work.

Row Six:

Working in the front loop only all the way across, Half double crochet in each of the first four stitches, *slip stitch in each of the next four stitches, half double crochet in each of the next four stitches.  Repeat from * across.  Chain one and turn your work.

Row Seven:

Working in the back loop only across, slip stitch in each of the first four stitches, *half double crochet in each of the next four stitches, slip stitch in each of the next four stitches.  Repeat from * across.  Chain one and turn your work.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern, repeat Rows 2-7.  Fasten off, weave in your ends.
