The Moonbeam Beanie crochet pattern is a wonderful hat design for both men and women! It features a subtle texture that is fairly easy to work!

The Moonbeam Beanie design features one of my favourite stitches: the herringbone stitch.  This stitch when turned at the end of each round resembles little braids.  It is an easy way to add a bit of variety and texture to a design! The Herringbone stitch is the same stitch used in my super bulky weight blanket pattern: Winter Bliss Throw Crochet Pattern.  I love the rhythm of the stitch when worked!

A Crochet Beanie for Men and Women worked in a white coloured yarn

The Construction:

This crochet beanie is worked from the bottom up.  I have worked a double thick brim in crochet slip stitches.  The Brim can be adjusted however so that it is not double thick.  You may also choose to work single or half double crochet stitches in the brim if you are not a fan of the slip stitches.  I do find that the slip stitches hold their shape better than a single crochet brim, but they can be a challenge to work.

I will explain more down in the pattern and video tutorials below, but you may also change the size of your beanie by working more or less stitches in the first round of the hat body.  There is no particular stitch multiple needed.

The Crochet Moonbeam Beanie

The Materials:

For the Moonbeam Beanie, I will be working with a single colour of a worsted weight yarn.  In the photos and in the video tutorial I am using the Color Theory Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn in the colour Moonbeam.  It is super soft and 100% acrylic.  You will only need 1.5 balls to complete this pattern.

For this pattern you will also need a 4.5 mm crochet hook.  In the video tutorial below I will be using a Birchwood Hook by Rowan Yarns.

This pattern will be written out in full below followed by a free video tutorial.  The pattern is free to follow on my site and will always be free! If, however, you would like a printable copy, you may purchase one from my Etsy and Ravelry Shops linked below:

Pattern Notes:

  • Pattern is written in American English terms.
  • Brim of hat is worked in rows, body of hat is worked in rounds.
  • Ch 1 at beginning of round does not count as stitch.
  • Do not turn at the end of each round, unless stated otherwise.
  • Weave in ends as needed.
  • OPTIONAL: Brim of hat may be worked using either single crochet stitches or half double crochet stitches instead of the slip stitches.  You may also wish to shorten the foundation chain to make a brim that is not folded over (i.e. ch 13)
  • To change the size of your beanie, you may use any multiple of stitches

Free Crochet Pattern:

Brim (Worked in rows):

Ch 26 (For brim that is folded over).

Row 1: Sl st in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.  Ch 1, turn.  (25 sl sts)

Row 2: Working in the blo, sl st in each st across.  Ch 1, turn.  (25 sl sts)

Continue to repeat row 2 until work from the beginning measures approximately 16-17 inches.

Do not fasten off, but fold brim of hat so that two shorter ends meet. Now working through both thicknesses, sl st across working through the blo on each side. Do not fasten off. If working the long brim that you intend on folding, simply turn your work to work around the edge.  If you are working a short brim that you will not fold up to wear, turn work right side out (so that the right side is facing you).

Now working around the edge of the brim, continue working in rounds as follows:
