This twisted ear warmer is an easy crochet pattern! It is worked using the single crochet thermal stitch making it extra warm.

I have been loving using the crochet thermal stitch in my projects lately! The single crochet thermal stitch is a very dense crochet stitch pattern, but one that has a bit of stretch to it.

This stretch makes it a great candidate for things like hats, such as this Men’s Thermal Beanie Crochet Pattern and in this twisted ear warmer today.  I look forward to also bringing you a fingerless gloves pattern in the coming days.

The Construction:

This ear warmer is worked in rows and worked as a single flat piece.  After the band is worked, it is folded and sewn in a way to create the twist in the ear warmer.  This process will be described below and shown in the video tutorial.

The Materials:

For this design, I will be using a lighter weight yarn by Lion Brand Yarn: Superwash Merino.  It is a 100% wool yarn that has lots of bounce to it.  This is the same yarn that I used in the men’s beanie and that I will also use in the fingerless gloves pattern.

In the written pattern below I will explain how to work the single crochet thermal stitch.  However, if you run into trouble, be sure to also check out the free video tutorial at the end of this post.

Pattern Notes:

  • Ch 1 at beginning of row does not count as stitch.
  • Weave in ends as needed.

Free Crochet Patterns:

Ch 22.

Row 1: Working in the blo, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.  Ch 1, turn.  (21 sts)

Row 2: Ts (see “stitches and abbreviations” in the first st and in each st across.  Ch 1, turn.  (21 sts)

Continue to repeat row 2 until your work from the beginning measures approximately 22 inches laid flat.  Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Fold your ear warmer in half so that the two short ends are touching.  Taking the two shorter ends in each had, fold on end in half so that it is making a “u” shape.  Now, keeping the far side away from you, slide the two short ends together so that the layers are stacking interlocking (i.e. you’ll have a layer of side A, then B, A, then B).

Now, using the remaining long tail, thread your needle and sew the two ends together being sure to work through all 4 layers of fabric.  Fasten off and weave in your ends.  Turn the ear warmer so that it is now right side out.
