Heading back to class or looking for a fun and colourful keychain? You will love this little Fluffball Keychain crochet pattern!
It’s that time of the year again! Children, teens and adults are heading back to class and these adorable little Fluffball keychains were designed with that in mind!
This past Spring one of my children asked me if I could make them some new keychains for their school backpacks. I was happy to start dreaming using the descriptions that they gave me and this is the first of a few keychains that I will be posting over the coming weeks!
The Fluffball Keychain crochet pattern is an easy design that is worked with a little medium/worsted weight cotton yarn. They are simply worked in rounds, then safety eyes are added to give some personality before they are stuffed and a keyring is added. My children call them little “Fluffball Monsters” and they really do look adorable hanging and swinging happily from their backpacks.
Of course, they don’t always have to find a home on a backpack, I currently have one on a spare set of keys!
What materials do you need to make a crochet keychain?
For this crochet keychain I used a worsted weight 100% cotton yarn called Dishie by KnitPicks and WeCrochet. I really loved using cotton for this project, but you could also use any fibre you had on hand. As long as it is a medium/worsted weight, you will get the same results. You will need about 120 yards for this project.
Along with the yarn you will need a 4mm (G/6) crochet hook, 2 6mm safety eyes (or you may embroider the eyes on as well. This keychain is NOT recommended for young children), a handful of fibrefill and a key ring.
You could also experiment with other yarn weights and crochet hook sizes though if you want to make it larger or smaller!

Fluffball Keychain Crochet Pattern:
Skill Level: Intermediate
Gauge: 18 sts x 24 rows of pattern = 4 inches
Finished Size: Approximately 3 x 2 inches, 9.25 inch circumference
Yarn: Dishie Worsted Weight by KintPicks/WeCrochet ® (190 yds; 100g; 100% cotton; (4) worsted weight). You will need approximately 120 yards per dishcloth in two colours.
Hook: Size G/6 (4 mm) hook.
Notions: Yarn Needle, 2 6mm safety eyes (optional), keychain ring, handful of fibrefill (more or less to reach desired firmness.
Stitches and Abbreviations:
Ch – Chain
Lp St – Loop Stitch (insert your hook into the next stitch, wrap the yarn once around your index finger of the hand that is holding your yarn. Next yarn over using that loop and being careful not to remove your finger from the loop yet and draw a loop through. Next very carefully remove your finger from the loop, yarn over again and draw through all of the loops on your hook.).
Lp St2tog – Loop Stitch Two Stitches together (insert your hook into the next stitch, wrap the yarn once around your index finger of the hand that is holding your yarn. Next yarn over using that loop and being careful not to remove your finger from the loop yet and draw a loop through. Pattern Notes:
- Pattern is written in American English terms.
- Pattern is worked in rounds
- Ch 1 at beginning of row does not count as stitch.
- Weave in ends as needed.
Free Crochet Pattern:
Make a magic ring OR chain 2 and work into the 2nd ch from your hook (NOTE: If using the second method, you may notice a small hole that you will want to tie closed before completing any pieces).
Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 6 sc into the ring. Join with a sl st in the 1st st. Do not turn (here and throughout) (6 sts)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, work 2 lp sts in each st around. Join with a sl st in the 1st st. (12 sts)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in the 1st st, 2 sc in the next st, *sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st; Rpt from * around. Join with a sl st in the 1st st. (18 sts)
Rnd 4: Ch 1, lp st in each of the 1st 2 sts, 2 lp sts in the next st, *lp st in each of the next 2 sts, 2 lp sts in the next st; Rpt from * around. Join with a sl st in the 1st st. (24 sts)
Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in each of the 1st 3 sts, 2 sc in the next st, *sc in each of the next 3 sts, 2 sc in the next st; Rpt from * around. Join with a sl st in the 1st st. (30 sts)
Rnd 6: Ch 1, lp st in each of the 1st 4 sts, 2 lp sts in the next st, *lp st in each of the next 4 sts, 2 lp sts in the next st; Rpt from * around. Join with a sl st in the 1st st. (36 sts)
Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc in the same st as joining and in each st around. Join with a sl st in the 1st st. (36 sts)
Rnd 8: Ch 1, lp st in the same st as joining and in each st around. Join with a sl st in the 1st st. (36 sts)
Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in the same st as joining and in each st around. Join with a sl st in the 1st st. (36 sts)
Rnd 10: Ch 1, lp st in the same st as joining and in each st around. Join with a sl st in the 1st st. (36 sts)
Rnd 11: Ch 1, sc in the same st as joining and in each st around. Join with a sl st in the 1st st. (36 sts)

Rnd 16: Ch 1, lp st in each of the 1st 2 sts, lp st2tog in the next st, *lp st in each of the next 2 sts, lp st2tog in the next st; Rpt from * around. Join with a sl st in the 1st st. (18 sts)
1. Position safety eyes in desired position toward the middle of you fluff ball on the front and secure into place.
2. Stuff the fluff ball with fibrefill.
Rnd 17: Ch 1, sc in the 1st st, sc2tog in the next st, *sc in the next st, sc2tog in the next st; Rpt from * around. Join with a sl st in the 1st st. (12 sts)
Rnd 18: Ch 1, sc2tog around. Join with a sl st in the 1st st. Fasten off with a long tail and use the long tail to sew the bottom of the fluff ball closed.
Fasten off and weave in your ends. Attach key ring key chain to the top.
Cut the loops! Clip the centre of each loop stitch to create long hairs.
