The front and back loop single crochet stitch pattern is a simple yet pretty design.  When worked this way, it adds variation and interest to a plain single crochet project!

This pattern is very easy to work and is worked using only single crochet stitches.  The design is created by alternating rows in the front loop and the back loop as the name suggests.

This pattern would work as a substitute for a design that uses simple single crochet.  It can be used in a variety of projects, from blankets, hats, scarves and many others as the stitch multiple is very flexible.  I can’t wait to see what you make with it!

The front and back loop single crochet stitch worked in grey yarn

Materials for this Tutorial:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Pima Cotton Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn. It is a worsted weight yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm crochet hook by Rowan Yarns (I purchased mine from Fleece and Harmony).  However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.

Thank you so much for stopping by! If you enjoy the tutorial below, be sure to also check out some of the many other crochet stitch tutorials on my site and pin this for later! You may wish to start with the Yarn Over Slip Stitch Ribbing | How to Crochet.

The Front and Back Loop Single Crochet:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.

To begin, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you may use any multiple of stitches for your foundation chain plus one.

Row One:

Single Crochet into the second chain from your hook and into each chain stitch across.  Chain one and turn your work.

Row Two:

Working in the front loop only of each stitch, single crochet in each stitch across.  Chain one and turn your work.

Row Three:

Working in the back loop only of each stitch, single crochet in each stitch across. Chain one and turn your work.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern simply repeat rows two and three for as long as you would like.  Fasten off and weave in your ends.
