The Crow’s Foot Spike Stitch is a unique crochet stitch pattern.  To best show off this stitch, you may wish to work it in multiple colours!

As is the case with the crochet rake stitch (a tutorial that can also be found here on my blog) the trick in this stitch is keeping the proper tension in your spike stitches.

Stitches that are worked too loose may not lay flat against the fabric.  Stitches that are worked too tightly may case the fabric to bunch.  But with a little practice, and help from the video tutorial below, you will soon get the hang of it!

Materials:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Cotton Aran by Paintbox Yarns. It is an aran weight yarn. The hook shown here and in the video below is a wooden streamline hook by Furls Crochet. However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.

Don’t forget to check out the video tutorial below!

Crow’s Foot Spike Stitch:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.  At the end of each row you will need to chain one and turn your work. The chain one does not count as a stitch.

For the tutorial today I will be using two colours.  My colour A will be Pink.  My colour B will be Blue.

To begin, with your colour A, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you will need a multiple of six stitches plus two for your foundation chain.

Today I will chain a total of 20 chain stitches.

Row One:

Single Crochet in the second chain from your hook and in each stitch all the way across.

Chain one and turn your work.

Rows Two to Four:

Single crochet in the first stitch and in each stitch across.  Change to colour B at the end of Row four.

Chain one and turn your work.

Row Five:

With colour B, single crochet in each of the first three stitches, * work one Spike Cluster in the place of the next stitch.

To work a Spike Cluster, insert your hook into the stitch one row below and two stitches back to the right, yarn over and draw up a loop.  Insert your hook into the next stitch two rows below, yarn over and draw up a loop.  Insert your hook in the stitch two stitches to the left and one row below, yarn over and draw up a loop.  Yarn over and draw through all four loops on your hook.

Single crochet in each of the next five stitches.

Repeat from * across ending with a single crochet in each of the final three stitches.

Chain one and turn your work.

Rows Six to Eight:

Single crochet in the first stitch and in each stitch across.  Change to colour A at the end of Row Eight.

Chain one and turn your work.

Row Nine:

With Colour A, single crochet in the first stitch, * single crochet in each of the next five stitches, work one spike cluster in the place of the next stitch.

Repeat from * across to the final six stitches, single crochet in each of the final six stitches.

Chain one and turn your work.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern, repeat rows two to nine for as long as you would like. Fasten off, weave in your ends and give yourself a high five!
