This Post and Shell Stitch is a beautiful stitch design! It is lacy with a little bit of texture.

It is also fun to work!

Doesn’t it look elegant?

The Post and Shell Stitch

This Post and Shell Stitch is an easy stitch to work. It is a two row repeat and includes front and back post double crochet stitches, double crochet and chain stitches.

The pattern is worked by creating simple shell stitches that are separated by front and back post stitches. By alternating the front and back post stitches in each row, the raised texture stays all to the front, leaving a smooth back.

    Materials:

For this tutorial I will be using the Caron x Pantone yarn by Yarnspirations along with a 5.5 mm crochet hook.  The hook shown here and in the video below is an Odyssey hook by Furls Crochet. However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.

    Post and Shell Stitch:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.  At the end of each row you will need to chain 3 and turn your work. The chain 3 at the beginning of a row does count as a double crochet stitch.

Don’t forget to check out the free video tutorial linked below!

To begin, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you will need multiples of 6 stitches plus 3 for your foundation chain.

For my swatch I will be making a foundation chain of 21 chain stitches.

    Row One:

Into the sixth chain from your hook, work 1 shell stitch. To work a shell stitch, work 2 double crochet, chain 1 and then work 2 more double crochet all into the same stitch.

Shell in the 6th ch from hook

Skip the next 2 chains, double crochet into the next stitch.

Sk 2, dc in the next st

Skip the next two chains and work a shell in the next stitch. Repeat the last two lines to the end of the row. Work one final double crochet into the final chain.

Sk 2, shell in the next st

Chain 3 (Counts as a double crochet) and turn your work.

    Row Two:

Into the next chain one space, work a shell.

Shell in the next ch-1 Sp

Skip the next two double crochet stitches. Front post double crochet around the post of the next stitch.

Repeat the lines above to the end of the row. Work one double crochet in the top of the chain 3.

Shell in the next ch-1 sp

Chain 3 and turn your work.

    Row Three:

Into the next chain one space, work a shell.

Shell in the next ch-1 sp

Skip the next two double crochet stitches. Back post double crochet around the post of the next stitch.

Repeat the lines above to the end of the row. Work one double crochet in the top of the chain 3.

Shell in the next ch-1 sp

Chain 3 and turn your work.

    And that’s it!

Repeat rows two and 3 for the entirety of the pattern!

Fasten off and weave in your ends.

I am new to crocheting. I made this into a baby blanket. What would you recommend I do to finish it. It looks to me like it needs an edging all the way around it
