The Crocodile Stitch has always been a fascinating stitch, both in its construction and its look!  There is no wonder why this stitch is a favourite for so many!

The Crocodile stitch is one of those stitches that is sure to catch your attention.  It looks great worked in one colour and also in many colours.  The stitch is also sometimes referred to as the Dragon Scales Stitch or the Petal Stitch.

The stitch is made up of unique clusters that give the impression of scales or petals which is from where it gets its name.

Materials:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Pima Cotton Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn. It is an aran weight yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm Clover Armour Crochet Hook. However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.

You will find a free video tutorial at the bottom of this post following the written instruction!

The Crocodile Stitch:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.

To begin, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you will need to chain a multiple of six stitches for your foundation chain plus four.

Row One:

Work one double crochet into the fourth chain from your hook (the starting chain three counts as a double crochet stitch), *chain two, skip the next two chains, work two double crochet into the next chain.

Repeat from * across to the end of the row.

Row Two:

Chain three and turn your work so that it is vertical so that the top of your stitches are now pointing to the right side.  Working around the post of the first double crochet stitch, work four double crochet stitches.

Chain one, now turn your work so that the five stitches just worked are at the bottom, work five double crochet stitches around the post of the next double crochet.

*Chain one, now once again turn your work so that the tops of the stitches are pointing to the right side, skip the next two double crochet stitches, work five double crochet stitches around the post of the next stitch.

Chain one, turn your work so that the five stitches just worked are at the bottom and work five double crochet stitches around the post of the next stitch.

Repeat from * across, at the end of this row, change colour if desired.

Row Three:

Chain three (this counts as a double crochet stitch, double crochet into the centre of the last crocodile stitch.  * Chain two, Work two double crochets between the next two crocodile stitch scales, working between the two double crochet posts from the first row and over top of the chain one between the two crocodile stitches of the row below.  Chain two, work two double crochet stitches in the centre of the next crocodile stitch.

Repeat from * across to the end of the row.

Row Four:

For this row you will want to work the crocodile stitches in between the stitches in the previous row to give them a staggered look.

Once again turn your work so that the tops of your stitches are to the right side.  * Chain One, skip the next two double crochet stitches, work five double crochet stitches around the post of the next stitch.

Chain one, turn your work so that the five stitches just worked are at the bottom and work five double crochet stitches around the post of the next stitch.

Repeat from * across, leaving the final two double crochet stitches unworked, slip stitch in between these last two stitches.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern, repeat rows one through to four.  Fasten off and weave in your ends.
