The Summer Shells Stitch is a beautiful crochet shell stitch pattern. The design is best displayed when it is worked in two or more colours!

In the tutorial below I will work the stitch in two colours.  The pattern is worked in rows, alternating colours every two rows. The rows are worked in a unique way however as two rows are worked before you will turn your work.  I will explain this in more detail in the written and video tutorials below!

Materials for this Tutorial:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Pima Cotton Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn. It is a worsted weight yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm crochet hook by Rowan Yarns.  However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.

The Summer Shells Crochet Stitch:

Abbreviations:

Dc – Double Crochet

Dc4tog – Double Crochet Four Stitches Together

Dc5tog – Double Crochet Five Stitches Together

Dc9tog – Double Crochet Nine Stitches Together

Rpt – Repeat

Sc – Single Crochet

Sk – Skip

Sl St – Slip Stitch

Notes:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.  You will need two colours: Colour A and B.

To begin, with COLOUR A, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you will need a multiple of eight stitches for your foundation chain plus two (multiples of 8+2).

For example, ch 26.

Row One:

Sc in the 2nd ch from hook, *sk the next 3 sts, 9 dc in the next st, sk the next 3 sts, sc in the next st; rpt from * across.  Do not turn.  Drop your colour A.  Return to the beginning of row one and join colour B in the first sc.  With COLOUR B, ch 4.

Row Two:

With colour B, dc4tog over the next 4 sts, *ch 3, sc in the next st, ch 3, dc9tog over the next 9 sts; rpt from * across to the final 5 sts ending with a ch-3, dc5tog over the next 5 sts.  Drop colour B and pick up colour A in the final stitch. Ch 1, turn.

Row Three:

With Colour A, sc in the 1st st, *sk the next ch-3 sp, 9 dc in the next sc, sk the next ch-3 sp, sc in the next st (which is your dc9tog); rpt from * across and sc in the top of the turning ch-4.  Drop colour A and return to the start of the row, pick up colour B.  Do not turn.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern you are going to repeat rows two and three changing colours each row and depending on where you pick up that colour will determine if you turn at the end of the row or not.  Repeat the pattern for as long as you would like.  Fasten off and weave in your ends.
