The Leyburn Market Bag crochet pattern is an easy design to work with a simple, but beautiful design using basic crochet stitches.

It’s a great pattern to kick off this years market bag crochet along! Welcome to week one of the 2025 Marvellous Market Bag Crochet Along!

I’m so happy that you are here! This is one of my favourite events to host each year. Market bags are a great way to try out new crochet stitches. They can be made using scrap yarn and yarn that you may even already have at home!

I find them a great alternative to the usual hats and scarves, and a great break from working on larger projects like blankets.

For our crochet along this year we will be working through four crochet market bags. If you missed the introduction, all of the details about the even can be found here and I hope you will crochet along: 2025 Marvellous Market Bag Crochet Along.

The Leyburn Market Bag crochet pattern is worked from the bottom up and all as one piece. I have crocheted the entire bag, but I know some of you are eager to hear about how you can add a leather or wood bottom.

How to add a non-crochet bottom to your bag:

It may become more clear when you come to the pattern below, but to add a non-crochet bottom to your bag, you will first need a bag bottom that measures approximately 11-12 inches across. After you have prepped the bottom, you will want to make sure that you have 114 stitches around the bottom of the bag. You will then pick up the pattern at round 6 of the bag bottom and continue working the pattern. This will be the case for each bag in this crochet along.

The Materials:

For the Leyburn market bag I used a worsted weight 100% cotton yarn called 24/7 by Lion Brand Yarn. I really love using cotton for market bags. Not only is it available in a wide range of colours, but it is also durable and holds its shape well, even when under a lot of stress!

The colour of yarn shown in the photos of the Leyburn Market Bag Crochet pattern is terracotta and you are going to need approximately two and a half balls, or 500 yards. You will also need a 4.00 mm (G/6) crochet hook.

PDF Copies are also Available:

The Leyburn Market Bag crochet pattern will be written out in full below and will forever remain free when viewed here on Rich Textures Crochet, and the written instruction will be followed by a video tutorial.  However if you would like to add this pattern to your library or purchase an ad free PDF, you may do so from either my Etsy or Ravelry Shop linked below:

My handles are way out of sync. I followed the instructions to the letter, counted and recounted. they are just way off. Help please. Love the bag though.
