The Houndstooth Beanie crochet pattern is a wonderful crochet beanie where it is all about the colour!

The body of the hat is worked in a stitch pattern that, when worked by alternating between two colours, is called the houndstooth stitch (when worked in a solid colour, it’s often referred to as the lemon peel stitch!). The stitch pattern is quite easy to work as it is only single crochet and double crochet stitches. You’re going to love it!

The Houndstooth Beanie worked in white and navy blue yarn with a grey pompom

The Houndstooth Beanie Crochet pattern is worked from the brim up and I have worked a slip stitch brim that is able to fold up and double thick. This is one of my favourite ways to work hat brims! There are ways to customize it, however. You may wish to work single crochet or half double crochet stitches instead of the slip stitches. Or, you may wish to work fewer stitches in your foundation chain and make a single layer brim. These two options may make the brim work up much quicker.

If you are looking for a Houndstooth beanie that is super quick to work up, you may wish to check out the Bulky Houndstooth beanie which is made with a bulky weight yarn!

Materials:

For the Houndstooth Beanie crochet pattern, I will be working with two colours of a worsted weight yarn.  In the photos and in the video tutorial I am using the Color Theory Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn.  It is super soft and 100% acrylic. I will note that although this yarn is classified as a worsted/medium weight, I do find it works up a little on the lighter side. Keep this in mind as if you substitute the yarn for another medium weight yarn you may need to adjust the number of stitches in your hat.

For this pattern you will also need a 4.5 mm crochet hook. The one shown in the video tutorial below was handcrafted by Bowltech Crochet hooks who can be found on Etsy.

Free Crochet Pattern:

Brim (Worked in rows):

With colour A, ch 26 (For brim that is folded over).

Row 1: Sl st in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.  Ch 1, turn.  (25 sl sts)

Row 2: Working in the blo, sl st in each st across.  Ch 1, turn.  (25 sl sts)

Continue to repeat row 2 until work from the beginning measures approximately 16-17 inches.

Do not fasten off, but fold brim of hat so that two shorter ends meet. Now working through both thicknesses, sl st across working through the blo on each side. Do not fasten off. If working the long brim that you intend on folding, simply turn your work to work around the edge.  If you are working a short brim that you will not fold up to wear, turn work right side out (so that the right side is facing you).

Now working around the edge of the brim, continue working in rounds as follows:
