The Almond Beanie is an easy crochet beanie with a beautiful texture! This is one design that you will want to make again and again.

This easy design is worked side to side instead of in the traditional bottom up or top down method.  The wonderful thing about working the beanie side to side is is that it’s easily customizable.  Although the size included below is just for an adult, you can easily customize it for any size you desire and I will include a hat sizing chart below.

A textured crochet beanie featuring the Almond Ridges Stitch

The Design:

This easy crochet beanie features the beautiful almond ridges stitch.  I recently fell in love with this stitch and provided a stitch tutorial specifically for the stitch on my YouTube Channel.  It is such a wonderful stitch pattern worked entirely of slip stitches and half double crochet stitches.  They are worked in the back loop only which gives the ridged texture.

The beanie is worked side by side using a magic ring at the top in order to help close it.  I have worked a couple of other beanies in this way such as the popular Rocky Beanie Crochet Pattern.  As mentioned above, it is easy to customize the design, simply work your starting chain to the desired height using the multiples below and then work the pattern to the desired width.  The chart below will help you find the right fit for your beanie.

The Materials:

For this crochet beanie today I will be using about 250 yards of a worsted weight acrylic yarn called Heartland by Lion Brand Yarn.  You see it here in the colour Dry Tortugas.  I will also be using a 5mm crochet hook.  In the video below I will be using a 5mm Crochet hook Rowan Yarns.  I purchased mine from Fleece and Harmony.

Pattern Notes:

  • Pattern is written in American English terms.
  • Pattern is worked in rows lengthwise.
  • The sl st into the ring and ch 1 at beginning of row does not count as stitch.
  • Each time you return to your starting loop after working the row, sl st into the centre of the loop before turning.
  • Weave in ends as needed.
  • OPTIONAL – Add pompom to the top.
  • Note: you can change the length of your beanie as desired, simply make your starting chain the desired length, then add one additional chain.  To make the circumference larger or smaller simply work the pattern to the width desired before working the seam.

Free Crochet Pattern:

Start by making a magic circle, then working out from that circle, ch 40.  (Alternatively you may ch 10 and join with a sl st in the first st to make a ring.)

Row 1: Sl st in the 2nd ch from hook and in each of the next 9 sts, *sl st in each of the next 4, hdc in each of the next 4 sts; rpt from * across, sl st into ring, ch 1, turn.  (39 sts)

Row 2:  Working in the blo all the way across, *sl st in each of the next 4 sts, hdc in each of the next 4 sts; rpt from * across to the final 10 sts, sl st in each of the next 10 sts.  Ch 1, turn.

Row 3: Working in the blo all the way across, sl st in each of the 1st 10 sts, *hdc in each of the next 4 sts, sl st in each of the next 4 sts; rpt from * across, sl st into ring, ch 1, turn.

Row 4: Working in the blo all the way across, *hdc in each of the next 4 sts, sl st in each of the next 4 sts; rpt from * across to the final 10 sts, sl st in each of the next 10 sts.  Ch 1, turn.

Row 5: Sl st in each of the next 10 sts, *sl st in each of the next 4, hdc in each of the next 4 sts; rpt from * across, sl st into ring, ch 1, turn.

Repeat rows 2-5 until your work from the beginning measures approximately 18 inches (or the desired circumference) then proceed as follows:

Turn hat inside out so that wrong side is facing.  Working through both thickness and the blo of both sides, sl st in each st across crocheting the two ends together.  Fasten off.

Pull the magic ring at the top of the hat gently closed and sew if needed.  Fasten off and weave in your ends.  Make optional pompom and affix to the top.

Hi Sarah, Love the new pattern. I have made half a dozen Rocky beanies! Love going side to side and love the bobbles. I also love the Heartland yarn, so I will be making the Almond beanie too. Thanks so much.

So great to hear! Enjoy 🙂

  2. I thought I was going to love this pattern. I don’t love it.. I don’t like that I have issues going in the back loop. I have issue with counting to four after each previous 4 and remembering which 4 I’m doing. I have to help each loop get on the hook. . This is a beast.. It’s not as fun as it looks.

  3. Hi Sarah, thank you for making this pattern available! I am almost finished with my almond beanie and I’m a bit worried that it might just be a little too “short” for me and won’t cover my forehead as much as I would like. Is there any way of adding an extension on the top? Like, when i’m fully done, is it possible to somehow continue the pattern as an addition?
