This Guardrail Stitch crochet pattern is easy to work and perfect for your crochet blankets, bags, shawls, sweaters and more!
I love how versatile this crochet stitch pattern is! It’s easy to work as a two row repeat, is not too bulky or dense and has beautiful drape. I came up with this stitch combination while playing around with another one what you will see in a few weeks and I love the result.
Half double crochet stitches are a favourite crochet stitch for many. This stitch uses pairs of half double crochet stitches which ensures that the final fabric is airy and light. It pairs them with single crochet stitches that are worked in the 3rd loop of the half double crochet stitches. I love this technique as it pushes the top of the stitches forward to create a ridge of texture running along top of the fabric.

The Materials:
For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Heatherly by KnitPicks and WeCrochet in a single colour. It is a worsted-weight yarn. You could also work this pattern in two or more colours. I will also be working with a 5 mm (H/8) crochet hook. However, you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.

Stitches and Abbreviations:
3rd Loop – To find your “3rd loop” you will look at the back of the half double crochet stitch and find the loop that runs horizontally just under the top back loop. This loop that you see running under the back loop of the hdc is the “3rd loop.”
Ch – Chain Stitch
Rpt – Repeat
Sc – Single Crochet
Sl St – Slip Stitch
Yo – Yarn Over
Pattern Notes:
This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial and it may be worked in one colour or many. I will be working this pattern in a single colour.
This pattern is written in American crochet terms.
To begin, make a slip knot and make a foundation chain. For this stitch, you will need to chain and odd number of stitches for your foundation chain.
For example, ch 31.
Row One:
Sc in the 2nd ch from your hook, sc in each st across, ch 1, turn.
Row Two:
Hdc in the 1st st, sk the next st, *2 hdc in the next st, sk the next stitch; rpt from * across, hdc in the final st, ch 1, turn.
Row Three:
Sc in the 1st st, working in the 3rd loop of each st, sc in each st across until 1 st remains, sc in the top of the final st. Ch 1, turn.
And that’s it!
For the rest of the pattern, repeat Rows two and three. Fasten off, weave in your ends.
