The Checkered Stitch is a unique way of working a solid fabric using basic stitches.

When colour is added to the pattern it really makes the subtile texture and pattern stand out.  While I will work the pattern in three different colours today, I have also seen this pattern worked in a single colour.

A swatch of the crochet checkered stitch worked in blue, white and grey yarn

The pattern itself is created using a variety of basic crochet stitches including double crochet and single crochet.  It is a great pattern for those who are just stating out in crochet, but also for those who have been crocheting for a while.

Materials for this Tutorial:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Pima Cotton Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn in three different colours. It is a worsted weight yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm birchwood crochet hook by Rowan Yarns.  However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose, even experiment with colour!

The Checkered Stitch:

Abbreviations:

Ch – Chain

Dc – Double Crochet

Rpt – Repeat

Sc – Single Crochet

Sk – Skip

Sl St – Slip Stitch

Yo – Yarn Over

Notes:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.  You may work the stitch in one colour or many.  I will be working the design in three colours.

To begin, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you will need a multiple of ten stitches plus six stitches for your foundation chain (multiples of 10+6).

For example, with colour A, ch 26

Row One:

Sc in the 2nd ch from your hook, sc in each of the next 4 sts, *dc in each of the next 5 sts, sc in each of the next 5 sts; Rpt from * across.  Change to colour B in the final st.  Ch 3 (counts as a dc), turn.

Row Two:

With colour B, dc in each of the next 4 sts, *sc in each of the next 5 sts, dc in each of the next 5 sts; Rpt from * across.  Switch to colour C in the final st.  Ch 1, turn.

Row Three:

With colour C, Sc in each of the 1st 5 sts, *dc in each of the next 5 sts, sc in each of the next 5 sts; Rpt from * across.  Switch to colour A in the final st.  Ch 3 (counts as a dc), turn.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern you will repeat rows two and three alternating through your colours A, B, and C.  Fasten off, weave in your ends.
