The Sand Stitch, sometimes called the Granule Stitch, features a fun and light texture.

The pattern is not quite as rough as a popcorn or bobble stitch pattern.  It has a slightly lighter feel than a faux popcorn pattern.  It’s a great stitch for when you want to substitute these heavier and more dense stitches for something finer.

A swatch of the Sand crochet stitch worked in a rust coloured yarn

The texture is created by using a special stitch called a Picot Single Crochet Stitch.  This stitch is created by inserting your hook into the next stitch and drawing up a loop as you would a single crochet.  Next you will, holding back the first loop on your hook, chain three and then yarn over one final time and draw through the two loops on your hook.  When you work the single crochet into the next stitch, the little chain will pop out and create the texture.  It’s quite fun!

Materials for this Tutorial:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Pima Cotton Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn in a single colour. It is a worsted weight yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm birchwood crochet hook by Rowan Yarns.  However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose, even experiment with colour!

The Sand Crochet Stitch

Abbreviations:

Ch – Chain

Psc – Picot Single Crochet (Insert your hook into the next Stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop.  Holding back the first loop on your hook, chain three in the second loop on your hook.  Yarn over and draw through the two loops on your hook.)

Rpt – Repeat

Sc – Single Crochet

Sk – Skip

Sl St – Slip Stitch

Yo – Yarn Over

Notes:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.  You may work the stitch in one colour or many.  I will be working the design in a solid colour.

To begin, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you will need a multiple of four stitches plus two stitches for your foundation chain (multiples of 4+2).

For example, ch 22.

Row One:

Sc in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each ch across.  Ch 1, turn.

Row Two:

Sc in the 1st st, *Psc (see “Stitches and Abbreviations” above) in the next st, sc in the next st; Rpt from * across.  Ch 1, turn.

Row Three:

Sc in the 1st st and in each st across.  Ch 1, turn.

Row Four:

Sc in each of the 1st 2 sts, *Psc in the next st, sc in the next st; Rpt from * across, sc in the final st.  Ch 1, turn.

Row Five:

Sc in the 1st st and in each st across.  Ch 1, turn.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern, repeat rows 2-5 for as long as desired.  Fasten off, weave in your ends.
