I love the look of the Puff Shell Stitch as it reminds me of ocean waves! The Stitch pattern creates a near solid fabric with a hint of raised texture in the puff stitches.

It looks feminine and lacy, but at the same time, if used with the right yarn and pattern could be quite soft and squishy.  The fabric is reversible as the design is the same on both sides.  I look forward to seeing how you use this beautiful crochet stitch!

The Crochet Puff Shell Stitch worked in a grey yarn

Materials for this Tutorial:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Pima Cotton Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn. It is a worsted weight yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm birchwood crochet hook by Rowan Yarns.  However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.

Thank you so much for stopping by! If you enjoy the tutorial below, be sure to also check out some of the many other crochet stitch tutorials on my site and pin this for later! You may wish to start with the Suzette Stitch | How to Crochet.

The Puff Shell Crochet Stitch

Abbreviations:

Ch – Chain

Dc – Double Crochet

Puff – Puff Stitch ([Yarn over, insert your hook in the indicated stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop] four times, yarn over and draw through all the loops on your hook.  Puff stitch made)

Rpt – Repeat

Sc – Single Crochet

Sk – Skip

Sl St – Slip Stitch

Yo – Yarn Over

Notes:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.  You may work the stitch in one colour or many.  I will be working the design in a solid colour.

To begin, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you will need a multiple of five stitches plus three stitches for your foundation chain (multiples of 5+3).

For example, ch 23.

Row One:

Sc in 2nd and each across, ch 3, turn.

Row Two:

Sk the next 2 sts, [4 dc, puff] in next st, *sk the next 4 sts, [4 dc, puff] in next; rpt across, sk the next 2 sts, dc in last, ch 3, turn

Row Three:

*Sk the next 4 sts, [4 dc, puff, ch 1] in next; rpt from * across, dc on top of turning ch, ch 3, turn

And That’s it!

For the rest of the pattern simply repeat row three.  Fasten off and weave in your ends.
