The Half Treble Crochet Stitch is a basic crochet stitch that is slightly taller than the double crochet stitch, but not quite as tall as the triple/treble stitch.

As the Half Treble Crochet Stitch is a basic stitch it can be worked using any multiple of stitches.  A piece of fabric worked in all half treble stitches is nearly solid and the same on both sides.  It can be used in a variety of projects and would work well in a variety of yarn weights.

Materials for this Tutorial:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Pima Cotton Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn in one colour. It is a worsted weight, 100% cotton yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm birchwood crochet hook by Rowan Yarns.  However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose, even experiment with stripes of colour!

Rpt – Repeat

Yo – yarn over

Notes:

  • Pattern is written in American English terms
  • Weave in ends as needed
  • This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.

To begin you will make a foundation chain.  For this pattern you may use any multiple of stitches plus two for your foundation chain.  The chain two at the start of each row does not count as a stitch.

For example, ch 30

Row One:

To make your first htr (Half Treble Stitch): Yo twice, insert your hook into the 3rd st, yo and draw through 2 loops, yo and draw through 3 loops.  Half Treble Stitch made.  Next repeat the above steps in each stitch all the way across.  Ch 2, turn.

Row Two:

Beginning in the 1st st, htr in each st all the way across.  Ch 2, turn.

And that’s it!

It’s so simple! Simply repeat row two for as long as you would like.  Fasten off, weave in your ends.
