The Pompom Stitch is a type of lace design featuring pops of textured puff stitches throughout.

The stitch is a fairly open stitch as a combinations of chains and double crochet stitches form almost a trellis around the puff stitches.  Once the stitch pattern is established, the pattern is an easy to remember two row repeat.  I could see this stitch being used in a variety of projects including lacy cardigans and tops, market bags and shawls.

Materials for this Tutorial:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Pima Cotton Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn in a single colour. It is a worsted weight yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm birchwood crochet hook by Rowan Yarns.  However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose, even experiment with colour!

Thank you so much for stopping by! If you enjoy the tutorial below, be sure to also check out some of the many other crochet stitch tutorials on my site and pin this for later! You may wish to start with the Cone Stitch | How to Crochet.

The Crochet Pompom Stitch

Abbreviations:

Ch – Chain

Puff – Puff Stitch ([Yarn over and insert you hook in the stitch indicated] five times, yarn over and draw through all the loops on the hook.  Puff Stitch made.)

Rpt – Repeat

Sc – Single Crochet

Sk – Skip

Sl St – Slip Stitch

Yo – Yarn Over

Notes:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial. You may work the stitch in one colour or many.  I will be working the design in a solid colour.

To begin, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you will need a multiple of four stitches, plus one for your foundation chain (4 + 1).

For example, ch 25.

Row One:

Dc in the 4th ch, ch 2, dc in same st, *sk 3, [dc, ch 2, dc] in next st; Rpt from * across to last st, dc in the last st, ch 3, turn.

Row Two:

In the ch-2 sp work puff st, *ch 2, sc between next two dc, ch 2, puff in the next ch-2 sp; Rpt from * across, dc in top of turning ch, ch 3, turn.

Row Three:

[Dc, ch 2, dc] in the top of each puff st across, dc in the 3rd ch of the turning ch, ch 3, turn.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern, repeat rows 2 and 3.  Fasten off, weave in your ends.
