The Jameson Beanie Crochet Pattern features a fun spike stitch design that really shows well in multiple colours!

And it is surprisingly very easy to work as the top of the hat is closed using my easy, no fuss close method! I have really enjoyed design my last couple of crochet beanies in this way including the Alicia Beanie Crochet Pattern and the Honeycomb Beanie Crochet Pattern.  If you enjoy this crochet hat design, you will definitely want to check the others out!

A grey and gold crochet beanie featuring spike stitches

The Jameson Beanie is worked from the brim up.  The brim is worked in rows using slip stitches (you can choose to work it in single crochet or half double crochet stitches).  The colour then comes out in the body of the hat that is worked in rounds using a combination of single crochet and spike stitches.

The top of the hat is simply cinched closed! You will work rounds of the pattern until you reach the desired height of the beanie.  You will then fasten off leaving a long tail and then use that tail to close the top of the hat.  This crochet beanie looks great with a pompom or without!

Materials:

For the Jameson Beanie, I will be working with two colours of a worsted weight yarn.  In the photos and in the video tutorial I am using the Color Theory Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn.  It is super soft and 100% acrylic.  You will only need one partial ball of each to complete this pattern.

For this pattern you will also need a 5 mm crochet hook.  In the video tutorial below I will be using a Birchwood Hook by Rowan Yarns.

Free Crochet Pattern:

Brim (Worked in rows):

With Colour A, Ch 13.

Row 1: Sl st in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.  Ch 1, turn.  (12 sl sts)

Row 2: Working in the blo, sl st in each st across.  Ch 1, turn.  (12 sl sts)

Continue to repeat row 2 until work from the beginning measures approximately 16-17 inches.

Do not fasten off, but fold brim of hat so that two shorter ends meet. Now working through both thicknesses, sl st across working through the blo on each side. Do not fasten off.  Turn work right side out (so that the right side is facing you and the seam in on the inside).

Now working around the edge of the brim, continue working in rounds as follows:

Hat Body (Worked in rounds):

Rnd 1: Ch 1, evenly work 70 hdc all the way around.  Join with a sl st in the first st, do not turn. (70 sts)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, Sc in the 1 st and in each st around.  Join with a sl st in the 1st st.  Switch to colour B in the final st, do no fasten off colour A, but carry it up the inside of your work, Do not turn (here and throughout).

Rnds 3-4: With colour B, ch 1, Sc in the 1 st and in each st around.  Join with a sl st in the 1st st.  Switch to colour A in the final st, do no fasten off colour B, but carry it up the inside of your work.

Rnd 5: With colour A, ch 1, *[work one sc in the next stitch but inserting your hook two rows below] five times, single crochet in each of the next five stitches.  Repeat from * all the way around, join with a sl st in the 1st st.

Rnd 6: With colour A, ch 1, Sc in the 1 st and in each st around.  Join with a sl st in the 1st st.  Switch to colour B in the final st, do no fasten off colour A, but carry it up the inside of your work.

Rnd 7: With colour B, ch 1 *sc in each of the next 5 sts, [work one sc in the next stitch but inserting your hook two rows below] five times; Repeat from * all the way around, join with a sl st in the 1st st.

Rnd 8: With colour B, ch 1, Sc in the 1 st and in each st around.  Join with a sl st in the 1st st.  Switch to colour A in the final st, do no fasten off colour B, but carry it up the inside of your work.

Rnds 9-36: Repeat rnds 5-8 seven more times, fasten off colour B at the end of rnd 36.

Rnds 37-38: Repeat rounds 5-6 once more, do not switch to colour B.

Fasten off leaving an extra long tail (I recommend 15-20 inches).  Using the long tail, sew the top of the hat closed by weaving the yarn in and out through the stitches at the top of the hat, then gently pull closed. Fasten off and weave in your ends.  Attach Pompom to the top if desired.
