You’re going to love this easy winter beanie! This easy crochet hat is to make! It features only a few stitches and is easy to adjust for sizing.

Operation Gratitude:

About a month ago I learn about Operation Gratitude.  If you haven’t heard of Operation Gratitude, it was a project that was started in 2003 by Carolyn Blashek who was inspired to reach out to those serving in the military, veterans, first responders, military families and wounded war heroes.  Since that moment of inspiration, millions of care packages have been sent out and appreciated.

With Sugar Bush Yarns:

In August, Sugar Bush Yarns contacted me asking if I would be willing to collaborate and help spread the word about this project as there is a need for handmade items such as hats and scarves.

I was more than excited to participate in this project!  Not only is my husband currently serving in the reserves, but I have a brother serving as well, both here in Canada.  I am happy to be able to contribute to this amazing project.

If you would like to know more about this project and how you can get involved, you’ll find more info, including the address to where you can send your handmade items here: Operation Gratitude with LoveCrafts

The Easy Winter Beanie

Using the super soft yarn called “Bold” by Sugar Bush Yarns I worked a hat pattern that I would like to make available to you should you wish to also participate in this project.  Of course, you’re welcome to make one for yourself, friends and family as well! You’re going to love how easy it is!

Sugar Bush Bold is a 100% Merino wool, but it is sooo soft! And when it was worked in this crochet ribbed pattern, it was like giving my head a gentle hug! I couldn’t believe how comfortable it was.

The Design:

The hat is worked using a ribbed pattern comprised of half double crochet stitches worked in the back loop only.  Back when I designed my Men’s Classic Beanie, I developed a way of working the hat around a magic ring.  This meant that there was very little sewing at the top of the hat and I loved the way that it gathered the fabric together at the top of the hat.

This hat is so easy to adjust!

This hat can be worked in a variety of ways.  Mine is a little longer so that it features a brim, a bit of slouch and a pompom on top.  But you can change the style to one that has no slouch, or no brim simply by changing the number of stitches that you work in your starting chain.  Be sure to check out the video tutorial below where I will explain this a bit more.

Free Crochet Pattern:

Start by making a magic circle, then working out from that circle, ch 59.

Row 1: Hdc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each across; at the end of the chain, when you reach your beginning loop, sl st into the centre of the loop. Turn.  (58 hdc)

Row 2:  Ch 1, working in the blo hdc in each st all the way across; turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, working in the blo hdc in each st all the way across; at the end of the chain, when you reach your beginning loop, sl st into the centre of the loop. Turn

Rows 4 onward: Repeat rows 2 and 3 until your work from the beginning measures approximately 19 inches or the desired width.

Finishing Touches:

Turn hat inside out so that wrong side is facing.  Working through both thickness and the blo of both sides, sl st in each st across crocheting the two ends together.  Fasten off leaving a long tail.

Using the long tail, sew the top of the hat closed. Fasten off and weave in your ends.  Make optional pompom and affix to the top.

  1. Hi! Love your blog and thank you for your YouTube videos. Could you reccomend an organic wool yarn that would be comparable to what you used for the easy winter beanie?
    Many Thanks!

Hello Katie – For an organic wool yarn I would recommend checking out the yarn by Fleece and Harmony. They hand dye it, it’s minimally processed and organic. I love ordering from them, they are located on Prince Edward Island, Canada. Any of their signature aran yarns will do 🙂 I hope that helps! https://fleeceandharmony.com

Can you recommend a non wool yarn? We love in the south and i like hats but don’t need the warmth of wool.

  4. I made mine in alpacha and its loght and super soft!
