Winter Chill Beanie | Free Crochet Pattern

Once the really cold weather hits, it’s always nice to have a thick, bulky weight beanie to throw on! That’s exactly what you’ll find with this crochet pattern for the Winter Chill Beanie.

This hat is very quick to work up! It is made using a super bulky weight yarn and only nine rounds.  Once you have a handle on the pattern, it will work up in one to two hours.

Sugar Bush Chill:

The yarn that I used for my project is called Sugar Bush Chill by Sugar Bush Yarns (you can learn more/purchase it here on Yarnspirations: Sugar Bush Chill on Yarnspirations.com).  This is a super bulky weight roving yarn which means that the yarn is not spun tightly.  The result is a yarn that is soft and plush.  It’s is a 100% super fine merino wool, great for those who love to work with and wear those natural fibres.  You may substitute this yarn for one of your choice, just make sure that it has the #6 or Super bulky weight symbol on the label.

I do love working with the Sugar Bush Yarns! Some of the other patterns I worked with some of their lighter weights include the Easy Children’s Crochet Hat Free Pattern and the Easy Winter Beanie – Free Crochet Pattern.  The Rustic River Beanie – Free Crochet Pattern and the Into the Bush Beanie – Free Crochet Pattern are both crochet hat pattern designs that feature some great texture and more complicated stitches.

Hat Construction:

This hat is worked from the bottom up.  I love working my hats this way! I find that it gives them a nice shape and stability.  The brim of the hat is worked in rows and is a ribbed pattern using slip stitches.  For those who are not a fan of the slip stitch brim, you may use a single crochet or half double crochet stitch (also worked in the back loop only).

You will notice that this pattern calls for two different size hooks.  For the brim you will use an 8 mm crochet hook.  I found when working with the bulky weight yarn, this made the stitches a little more snug and allowed them to hold their shape better.  When it comes time to work the body of the hat you will switch to a 10 mm crochet hook.

In my video tutorial, you will see me using a wooden Furls Streamline crochet hook in Ebony.  If you are interested in learn more about these hooks, you can do so here: Furls Crochet Homepage.

The hat body is only nine rounds, as mentioned and is primarily made up of shell stitches.
