I love to read and when I cozy up with my cup of hot coffee, my favourite crochet throw, and my latest read, I love to turn the pages to reveal a crocheted bookmark!

I Love Crochet Bookmarks!

If you have been following my blog for a bit, you will know that I have several crochet bookmark patterns including the Chevron Bookmark – A Free Crochet Pattern, the Making Waves Bookmark – Free Crochet Pattern and the Granny Square Bookmark – Free Crochet Pattern.  I thought it’s about time I added to my collection, and thus we have the Spiked Granny Square Bookmark!

Paton’s Grace Yarn by Yarnspirations:

As with all of my other crochet bookmark patterns, I am using the Paton’s Grace Yarn by Yarnspirations.  It is a light weight (3#) mercerized 100% cotton yarn.  I love using it for these bookmarks because it comes in a variety of colours, it’s light weight, but not too light to work with.

Along with the Paton’s Grace yarn I am using a 3.5 mm crochet hook.  You will also need a yarn needle and scissors for finishing off your work.  I did not feel that I needed to block these bookmark however you may if you desire.  Because they are cotton, ironing them is also an option.

Crochet Bookmarks make great gifts!

I do use my bookmarks regularly, but they have also made great gifts! They do not take too long to make.  I have had friends make them and others purchase them from me to give as teachers gifts for Christmas and at the end of the year.  These would make a great addition to your spring and winter craft sale tables!

Spiked Granny Bookmark:

Skill Level: Easy

Gauge:  N/A

Finished Size: Approximately 1.5 x 7 inches, excluding tassel.

Yarn: Patons Grace® (100% Mercerized Cotton; 1.75 oz, 50 g; 136 yds, 125 m). Light Weight (3). You will need three colours, approximately 20 yards of each.  BUY IT NOW on Yarnspirations
Hook: Size 4/E (3.5 mm) hook. BUY IT NOW at Furls Crochet

Notions: Yarn Needle

Stitches and Abbreviations:

Ch – Chain

Dc – Double Crochet

Rpt – Repeat

Sc – Single Crochet

Sk – Skip

Sl st – Slip stitch

Spike Stitch – Double crochet stitch worked in the stitch indicated two rows below.

Yo – Yarn over

Pattern Notes:

• Pattern is written in American English terms.
• Pattern is worked in rows lengthwise.
• Ch 1 at beg of row does not count as stitch.
• Ch 3 at beg of row counts as a dc.
• Weave in ends as needed.
• Tassel embellishment is optional.

Free Crochet Pattern:

With colour A, ch 32.

Row 1: With colour A, 2 dc in the 4th ch from hook, * ch 1, sk 3, 3 dc in the next ch; rpt from * across, switch to colour B, turn.  Fasten off colour A.

Row 2: With colour B, ch 4 (Counts as dc, ch 1), sk the first 3 dc, * dc in next ch-1 sp, Spike stitch in the centre of the skipped 3 sts two rows below, dc in the same ch-1 sp, ch 1 **, skip 3 dc; rpt from * across, ending last rpt at **, sk 2 dc, dc in the top of the ch-3, switch to colour C, turn.  Fasten off colour B.

Row 3: With colour C, ch 3 (counts as a dc), sk the first dc, Spike Stitch in the first sk st two rows below, dc in first ch-1 sp, * ch 1, sk 3 dc, dc in next ch-1 sp, spike stitch in the centre stitch of the skipped 3 sts two rows below, dc in the same ch-1 sp; rpt from * across working final set of dc into the turning ch-4 sp and the final dc into ch 3 of the ch-4, switch to colour B, turn.  Fasten off colour C.

Rows 4-5: Repeat row 2 (in colour B) and row 3 (in colour A).

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Edging is worked along the two short ends:

Row 1: Join yarn with a sl st in the top right corner, work 8 sc across, fasten off and weave in ends.  Repeat for second side.

OPTIONAL: Make tassel in desired colour and affix to the end of the bookmark.
