Midwinter Blanket – Free Crochet Pattern

Winter can’t seem to make up its mind this year in Southwestern Ontario, Canada.  Regardless, this free crochet pattern for the Midwinter Blanket is sure to make the coldest winter nights more cozy!

Only a few days ago I was bundling up the kids before they headed outside because of a -35 degree Celsius wind chill.  Today we were splashing through puddles and rain outside as the temperatures crept up to a near balmy 4 degrees Celsius! Tomorrow we will be bundled up again bracing the wind and snow.  See what I mean? Winter just can’t make up it’s mind!

Bulky Weight Yarn:

As the midwinter settles in every, year I find myself gravitating to bulkier weight, soft and cozy, wool blend yarns such at the Wool-Ease Thick and Quick by Lion Brand.  I love its texture, is softness and the array of colours.

If your curious about other super bulky weight yarn blankets I’ve done in more earthy tones, you may consider checking out the The Winter Cottage Throw – A Free Pattern or the Ripple in Time Throw – A Free Crochet Pattern.  Both are just as warm!

The Blanket:

For my blanket this year I selected a timeless colour.  The clean lines and subtle texture of this blanket give it a modern look.  I am in love with fringe and tassels at the moment when it comes to my throw blankets around the home.  But the fringe that I have added here to mine is completely optional.

Skill Level:

This is an easy level blanket.  It only features two stitches (a half double crochet and a slip stitch) and it is worked as one piece.  It uses seven bonus bundles of the Lion Brand Thick and Quick and then an eighth ball if you choose to add the fringe.

Doesn’t it just look so cozy?

  1. I’m afraid the yardage of the balls of yarn is listed incorrectly. It says 121 yards and should read 221, I think. Can you double check? Thanks.

    1. You can use any yarn, you’ll just want to change the number of stitches in your starting chain. No particular multiple is stitches is needed, just chain until you reach the desired length for the width of the blanket

  2. My edges have gone wonky, so I’d like to add a border to this blanket. Do you have a recommendation?

      1. Thanks. It turned out beautiful! Can’t figure out how to attach a picture, or I would. 🙂

      2. So glad to hear! Feel free to post to the Rich Textures Crochet Community Facebook group 🙂 I’d love to see!

  3. I’m only finding this yarn being sold in 6oz skeins. Where did you find 12 oz skeins? Just want to be sure I’m buying enough yarn 🙂

  4. I love this so much. I’ve bought all my expensive yarn but I can not stop my blanket from curling. What am I doing wrong? I’ve tried loose and tight and it’s still happening! Thanks 🙂
