The Construction:

This hat is constructed the same way as the adult version, with just a couple of variations.

I love how these hats are put together! This children’s crochet hat pattern begins by starting with a magic ring.  From that magic ring you will chain your starting chain, turn, single crochet in each stitch back to the ring, slip stitch into the ring, turn and start again.  At the end all you have to do is pull your magic ring closed and sew the small opening at the top of the hat closed.  It’s that easy!

Don’t worry, following the written pattern below, you will find a complete video tutorial.

I think these hats would be a great gift and an excellent hat for newborns in hospitals.  The hat has a lot of stretch to it and the brim is not fixed so the size is fairly flexible.  You can leave the hat without a pompom or add one to the top if you would like.

The Yarn:

For this easy children’s crochet hat pattern I used a yarn called Bold by Sugar Bush yarns.  It is a super soft, super wash 100% wool.  It comes in a variety of colours and I love how it works up clean and crisp.  The warmth of the wool is an added bonus during those long winter months!

You can find out more about this yarn here on the Yarnspirations website:
Sugar Bush Bold Yarn, Atlantic Almond

I have paired this yarn with a 5.5 mm crochet hook.

  • Each time you return to your starting loop after working the row, sl st into the centre of the loop before turning, then ch 1.
  • Weave in ends as needed.
  • OPTIONAL – Add pompom to the top.
  • Note: you can change the length of your beanie as desired, simply make your starting chain the desired length, then add one additional chain.
  • NOTE: Chain counts for the different sizes are indicated in the parenthesis

Free Crochet Pattern:

Start by making a magic circle, then working out from that circle, ch 26, 31 (36, 41, 46, 51).

Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each across; at the end of the chain, when you reach your beginning loop, sl st into the centre of the loop. Turn.

Row 2:  Ch 1, working in the blo sc in each sc all the way across; turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, working in the blo sc in each sc all the way across; at the end of the chain, when you reach your beginning loop, sl st into the centre of the loop. Turn

Rows 4 onward: Repeat rows 2 and 3 until your work from the beginning measures approximately 10, 11 (12, 13, 14, 15) inches or the desired width.

Turn hat inside out so that wrong side is facing.  Working through both thickness and the blo of both sides, sl st in each st across crocheting the two ends together.  Fasten off leaving a long tail.

Using the long tail, sew the top of the hat closed. Fasten off and weave in your ends.  Make optional pompom and affix to the top.
