Whether you are looking for a new game for your game shelf, a craft market seller, or Christmas gift, this Travel Tic Tac Toe game crochet pattern is sure to delight!

This past summer I made a few crochet games to help keep my children busy as we traveled on our holidays. These included a fun kick sack and a convenient pocket flying disc. One of the favourites, however, as it could also be played in the car, was this classic Travel Tic Tac Toe game!

This little game features a game board that also doubles as a handy storage bag that makes cleaning up and storage a breeze!

How to make a travel tic tac toe game:

This little game is easy to make. You will make the bag first as two separate pieces. On the front of the bag you will work some surface slip stitches across in order to make the vertical lines. This technique I will demonstrate in the video tutorial below. Once your front and back are complete, you will crochet them together and finish off the bag with a simple edging around the top.

I worked a quick slip stitched chain as a draw string that is woven in and out through the chain spaces at the top of the bag to make and easy open and close.

The little game pieces are worked by working two circles, one in colour A and one in colour B and then join them by crocheting around. You will want to make at least ten for the game, then enjoy!

Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each st across.  Ch 1, turn. (26 sts)

Rows 2-8: Sc in the 1st st and in each st across. Ch 1, turn.  At the end of row 8 switch to colour B and fasten off colour A.

Row 9: With colour B, Sc in the 1st st and in each st across. Switch to colour A, ch 1, turn.  Fasten off colour B.

You will now work the vertical rows of the game board using colour B and surface slip stitch.  Beginning at the bottom of the board, join colour B with a slip st between the eighth and ninth stitch.  Using the stitches as a guide slip stitch your way up to the top of the game board until you reach row 26.  Fasten of colour B.  Reattach colour B between the 17th and 18th stitch and, using the stitches as a guide, slip stitch in a straight line up to row 26.  Fasten off and weave in your ends.

Set the front of the game board aside.

Back:

With colour A, ch 27.

Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each st across.  Ch 1, turn. (26 sts)

Rows 2-28: Sc in the 1st st and in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

Join the Front and Back Together:

With the wrong sides together, place the front over the back.  With colour A and working through both thickness, join with a sl st in the top corner.

Do not fasten off but turn your bag so you are now working around the top of the bag and proceed as follows:

Bag Top (Worked in rounds):

Rnd 1: Ch 1, Sc in each st across, work one sc in the side seam, sc in each st across, sc in the side seam.  Join with a sl st in the 1st st.  Ch 1, do not turn.  (54 sts)

Fasten off, weave in your ends.

To Work the Tie:

With colour B, ch 70.  Sl st in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each st across.  Fasten off, weave in your ends.

Weave the drawstring in and out through the ch-1 sps on your game bag.  OPTIONAL: Once the drawstring has been woven through, tie the two ends together in a knot.

Game Pieces (Worked in rounds):

Game pieces are worked in rounds and each has one side worked in colour A, one side in colour B.  These sides are then crocheted together using colour B.

Rnd 1: Ch 2, 8 sc into the 2nd ch from your hook.  Join with a sl st in the 1st st.  (8 sts)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, work 2 sc into each st all the way around.  Join with a sl st in the 1st st.  (16 sts)

Fasten off.  Work opposite side in contrasting colour.

OPTIONAL: For less ends to weave in, work the colour A side first and the colour B side second.  At the end of the colour B side do not fasten off, but continue to work the final round in colour B.

Place the sides over top of one another.  With colour B work one final rnd working through both sides:

Rnd 3: Ch 1, working through both pieces all the way around, sc in the 1st st, 2 sc in the next st, *sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st; Rpt from * around.  Join with a sl st in the 1st st.  (24 sts)

Fasten off, weave in your ends.

Repeat the above steps for the Game Piece until you have worked 10 pieces.
