It’s summertime and these footbag crochet patterns are all the rage. This one is so easy you’ll want to make it again and again!

I remember collecting these as a teen (although they are most commonly known by another popular trademarked brand!), and it seems that this year they have made a big comeback!

It’s easy to see why with the push for outdoor activity and the craze of various fidget toys and accessories. Depending on what you decide to use as filling for your footbag, it can have a very different feel and weight.

This crochet footbag design is very easy to make! No stitch markers needed and it can be made in about an hour using crochet cotton scraps of yarn.

I encourage you to use whatever you may have on hand to fill them. I have made several now and have experimented with fibrefill, large beads and small, rice and even dried lentils! Each gave the footbag and different feel and weight.

In the tutorial below, I will use dried green lentils from my pantry. They are too large to push through the small gaps in a crochet fabric, yet have a satisfying weight and texture. The lentil filling is my children’s favourite result!

How to Make a Crochet Footbag:

The crochet pattern today is very simple! It’s worked using basic single crochet stitches, worked in rounds from the top down.

For my footbag I used three different colours and changed colour after every row. The yarn that is not being using is carried up on the inside of the design so that there is no need to fasten off at the end of each round.

The design is easy to customize and you can change colour as often as desired as you go.

Materials needed to crochet a Footbag:

I mentioned above that I used cotton yarn scraps. I recommend a 100% cotton worsted/medium weight yarn for your footbag for its durability. Unlike an acrylic yarn, it is going to hold its shape and not stretch as much.

With cotton yarn, there are many different colours which means your design options are endless!

Along with my cotton yarn, I used a 3.75mm (F/9) crochet hook. Using a smaller crochet hook than what is recommended for the yarn weight means that your stitches are going to be tighter and there is less of a chance of your filling pushing through.

Finally, you are going to need something to fill your footbag with. Some options include fibrefill, beads, rice, dried lentils, corn or peas… whatever you have around the house really!

Pattern Notes:

  • Pattern is written in American English terms.
  • Pattern is worked in rounds
  • Ch 1 at beginning of round does not count as stitch.
  • Weave in ends as needed.
  • Tip: When stuffing the footbag, I found a larger grain item/bead was less likely to poke through the stitches and fall out.
  • Do not fasten off at the end of each round, simply carry the yarn up the inside of your footbag.
