The extended crochet stitches, like this Extended Single Crochet, are a wonderful collection that can give your next project a little more height!

Over the next few weeks it is my hope to introduce you to four of these extended stitches including the extended single, half double, double and treble stitches. Today we will begin with the Extended Single Crochet Stitch.

The extended single crochet stitch is worked in a similar way to a regular single crochet, except that you are extending the stitch by drawing your first loop only through one loop on your hook before completing the stitch. The result is a stitch that is slightly taller with a unique look.

Now you may be asking when you might use an extended single crochet instead of a regular single crochet. You can use these extended stitches to simply provide an interesting design to your fabric. You may also use them to add drape to your fabric. The extended single crochet stitch is not as dense as it’s standard form so your final fabric would have more flow.

One final area I’ve seen these stitches used is when working into stitches that are two or more rows below, especially if they are post stitches or being worked in only the front or back loops. Using a longer stitch means that there is less chance for your fabric to bunch or curl.

The Materials:

For this tutorial today, I will be using a small amount of Heatherly by KnitPicks and WeCrochet in a single colour. You are also able to work this stitch in a single colour or more. The Heatherly yarn is a medium/worsted weight yarn that is a wool blend. Along with my worsted weight yarn, I will also be working with a 5 mm (H/8) crochet hook.

Pattern Notes:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial and it may be worked in one colour or many. I will be working this pattern in a single colour.

This pattern is written in American crochet terms.

The turning ch does not count as a stitch.

To begin, make a slip knot and make a foundation chain. For this stitch pattern, you may use any number of stitches for your foundation chain.

For example, ch 30.

Row One:

ExSc (See “Stitches and Abbreviations” above) in the 2nd ch from your hook, ExSc in each st across. Ch 1 (does not count as a st), turn.

Row Two:

ExSc in the 1st st, st and in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern, simply repeat row two. Fasten off, weave in your ends.
