Have you ever wanted to be a crochet designer? Now is your chance in the Make it Your Way Blanket Crochet Along!

Welcome! I love hosting crochet alongs! Not only are they a lot of fun, but they are a great way to meet new people, try out new crochet stitches and admire the talent of many crochet fibre artists like yourself! In the past, my Market Bag crochet alongs have been a hit including The Even More Marvellous Market Bag Crochet Along! of 2022.  (And I do look forward to hosting another Market Bag crochet along this coming May!)

The Make it Your Way Crochet Along is a blanket crochet along featuring ten different crochet stitch patterns – from which you can choose five or more, or less! You be the designer, to make a crochet stitch sampler blanket!

The Make it Your Way Crochet Along

How the Crochet Along Works:

You Choose your Yarn and Colours!

You will start by choosing the yarn you would like to use! The only condition is that it is a worsted/medium weight yarn.  You can use a different weight of yarn, but realize it will drastically change the size of your finished square! That being said, each week I will provide stitch multiples for your foundation chains should you like to adjust the size of your square if needed.

Each square will be designed in a worsted/medium weight yarn.  For my blanket I will be using the Vanna’s Choice yarn by Lion Brand Yarn.

You will also want to choose your colour palette! Do you like working in neutrals? Jewel tones? Pastels? Grey’s and blacks? Rainbow? You decide! I have chosen four different colours following an earthy toned colour palate including the colours Dusty Blue, Shadow, Linen, Taupe, and as I made two full blankets in order to work all of the squares, one of the blankets will also include Silver Heather.  I chose four colours for each blanket and worked each stitch pattern in each colour (Every week you will make 4 squares all in the same pattern).  Again, you are the designer! I can’t wait to see what colours you choose!

Choose your Stitches!

Each week, here on Rich Textures Crochet and on my YouTube Channel, I will publish two different crochet afghan square patterns for free.  Each square will feature a particular stitch pattern.  You will choose which square you would like to incorporate into your blanket! You can choose one.  You can choose both.  You might not like the squares at all for that week and choose to go back and select the second from the week before! It is up to you!

Each week however you will want to make a set of squares in a least one stitch pattern.  Each final completed blanket design features five different stitch patterns.

You will need to make four squares of each stitch pattern that you choose (one in each colour of yarn).

At the end of the crochet along you will have worked four squares (one in each colour) in each of the five different stitch patterns that you have chosen.  Your finished blanket will have a total of 20 squares and each square measures approximately 10 x 10 inches.

Choose your Edging!

For the final week of the crochet along, we will join our 20 squares together and I will once again give you two options for an edging on your blanket.

Once you are done your blanket you can post the final photo in the Rich Textures Crochet Community Group on Facebook or tag RichTexturesCrochet across your social platform of choice! It is possible that no two blankets from this crochet along will be the same!

Does it sound like fun?? I’m Excited!

The Materials:

Along with my Vanna’s Choice yarn I will be using a 6 mm (J/10) crochet hook for all but one of the squares.  For one square (Option B of Week Five) I will be using a 5 mm (H/8).  In the video tutorials you will see me using a Birchwood Crochet Hook by Rowan Yarns.

As mentioned above I will be posting two crochet afghan squares each week and you will choose one.  In order for you to prepare, I will include the total amount of yarn needed to make four squares in each pattern below:

March 1, 2023

Week One: Option A: 520 yards: The Spiked Sedge Stitch Square

Week One: Option B: 440 yards: The Suzette Afghan Square

March 8, 2023

Week Two: Option A: 430 yards: Almond Afghan Square Crochet Pattern

Week Two: Option B: 450 yards: Extended Moss Stitch Afghan Square Crochet Pattern

March 15, 2023

Week Three: Option A: 480 yards: Straight Cables Afghan Square Crochet Pattern

March 29, 2023

Week Five: Option A: 335 yards: Feathers Afghan Square Crochet Pattern

Week Five: Option B: 625 yards: Tide Pool Afghan Square Crochet Pattern

April 5, 2023

Week Six: You will then need an extra 200 – 350 yards available for your blanket edging.

If you were to make a blanket using only option A squares, your approximate total amount of yarn needed for the blanket would be 2, 565 yards of yarn.

I you were to make a blanket using only option B squares, your approximate total amount of yarn needed for the blanket would be 2, 900 yards of yarn.
