Welcome to week one of the 2023 Wonderful Hats Crochet Along! Today we will learn how to crochet the beautifully textured Windermere Beanie!

I am so excited to be hosting this crochet along again this year! It is always a lot of fun and it is a great opportunity to get a head in making Christmas gifts and winter wear for the colder seasons.  I look forward to seeing all of your finished hats and scarves!

If this is your first time hearing about the Wonderful Hats Crochet Along, be sure to check out all of the details here: 2023 Wonderful Hats Crochet Along.  You can also see one of the most popular beanies from the event a couple of years ago: Elizabeth Beanie Crochet Pattern.

A sweet of three textured crochet beanies in grey, green and tan coloured yarn

Our crochet beanie today (and the matching crochet scarf that will follow on Friday), features an easy to work texture.  It uses some of my favourite techniques including front and back post double crochet stitches and single crochet stitches that are worked in the back loop only. If you are unsure of these techniques, do not worry! I will include a full video tutorial at the bottom of this post.

This crochet hat, along with the others in this crochet along, is worked from the brim up.  The brim of the hat is worked in rows and you will see it here worked entirely of slip stitches.  As I will explain in the notes and video tutorials below, if slip stitches are not your thing, feel free to swap the slip stitches for single crochet or even half double crochet stitches.  I do love the slip stitches though as they make a knit-look brim that has some stretch and holds its shape well.

The Materials:

In the photos and video tutorial I have worked the crochet beanie in a 100% acrylic worsted weight yarn called Impeccable by Loops & Threads.  This yarn is exclusive to Michaels Stores.  If you are looking for a substitute, you may use any worsted/medium weight yarn such as this Heartland Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn.  You will need about 250 yards to make this beanie, possibly a little more depending on your pompom.  You will also need a 5 mm crochet hook.  In the video below you will see me using a Birchwood Crochet Hook by Rowan Yarns.

Pattern Notes:

  • Pattern is written in American English terms.
  • Brim of hat is worked in rows, body of hat is worked in rounds.
  • Ch 1 at beginning of round does not count as stitch.
  • Do not turn at the end of each round, unless stated otherwise.
  • Weave in ends as needed.
  • OPTIONAL: Brim of hat may be worked using either single crochet stitches or half double crochet stitches instead of the slip stitches.
  • To change the size of your beanie, you will need a multiple of 2 stitches for the first round of the hat body.

Brim (Worked in rows):

Ch 13

Row 1: Sl st in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.  Ch 1, turn.  (12 sl sts)

Row 2: Working in the blo, sl st in each st across.  Ch 1, turn.  (12 sl sts)

Continue to repeat row 2 until work from the beginning measures approximately 16-17 inches.

Do not fasten off, but fold brim of hat so that two shorter ends meet. Now working through both thicknesses, sl st across working through the blo on each side. Do not fasten off.  Turn work right side out (so that the right side is facing you and the slip stitch seam is on the inside).

Now working around the edge of the brim, continue working in rounds as follows:
