Add a little traditional flair to your home with this easy-to-work Traditions Dishcloth crochet pattern!

A checkered or plaid look has always been a popular and more traditional look for dishcloths. When you recreate these designs, it often results in complicated colour changes. I tried to eliminate those with this Traditions Dishcloth crochet pattern.

The Traditions Dishcloth is simply worked in colour stripes using a moss stitch crochet pattern. Once the cloth is worked, you will finish it off by working a technique called “surface crochet,” where you work a series of stitches, in our case slip stitches, across the top of your fabric. It can be a bit tricky to hang onto at first, but with repetition, it gets much easier!

What Materials will you need to crochet this dishcloth?

Today, in my photos and the free video tutorial below, I will use the Dishie Cotton by WeCrochet to make the Traditions Dishcloth crochet pattern. It is a wonderfully soft cotton yarn. For the dishcloth, you will need about 100 yards of 100% cotton yarn. You will also need a 4mm (G) crochet hook.

I wrote a book!

Have you heard? I’ve written a book! Barn Quilt Blankets is now available for sale in both paperback and ebook format on Amazon! If you enjoy working the moss stitch, each of the blankets is primarily worked in this stitch pattern. Click on the photo below to learn more!

Free Crochet Pattern:

With Colour A, ch 35.

Row 1: Sc in the 3rd ch, *ch 1, sk the next st, sc in the next st; Rpt from * across.  Ch 2, turn.  (33 sts)

Row 2: Sk the 1st sc, *sc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk the next; Rpt from * across ending with an sc in the ch-2 sp.  Ch 2, turn.  (Note: when working in row two only, you may wish to work your sc sts into the skipped chain stitch of you foundation chain.  This will minimize any gaps around the stitches when you work your final edging.)

Rows 3-6: Sk the 1st sc, *sc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk the next; Rpt from * across ending with an sc in the ch-2 sp.  At the end of row 6, switch to colour B in the final st.  Ch 2, turn.

Rows 7-8: With colour B, Sk the 1st sc, *sc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk the next; Rpt from * across ending with an sc in the ch-2 sp.  At the end of row 6, switch to colour A in the final st.  Ch 2, turn.

Rows 9-14: With colour A, sk the 1st sc, *sc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk the next; Rpt from * across ending with an sc in the ch-2 sp.  At the end of row 6, switch to colour B in the final st.  Ch 2, turn.

Rows 15-16: With colour B, Sk the 1st sc, *sc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk the next; Rpt from * across ending with an sc in the ch-2 sp.  At the end of row 6, switch to colour A in the final st.  Ch 2, turn.

Rows 17-22: With colour A, sk the 1st sc, *sc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk the next; Rpt from * across ending with an sc in the ch-2 sp.  At the end of row 6, switch to colour B in the final st.  Ch 2, turn.

Rows 23-24: With colour B, Sk the 1st sc, *sc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk the next; Rpt from * across ending with an sc in the ch-2 sp.  At the end of row 6, switch to colour A in the final st.  Fasten off colour B.  Ch 2, turn.

Rows 25-30: With colour A, sk the 1st sc, *sc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk the next; Rpt from * across ending with an sc in the ch-2 sp.

At this time you may choose to fasten off your colour A and then join with a sl st when it comes to work the edging or you may leave it attached while you work your vertical rows.

Surface Crochet:

To work the vertical rows of colour B, count in from the edge 7 sts and with colour B, join your yarn in the foundation ch.  Now working along the length of your fabric, work sl sts across the top of your fabric.  To do so, insert your hook into the top or space of the next st, yo under the fabric and draw a loop up.  Repeat this process in each sp/st across.  Once you come to the opposite side, fasten off.

Once again at the bottom of the dishcloth, join your yarn in the next st and repeat the above steps.

Once you have completed the first row, count 6 sts along your foundation chain, join your yarn and begin again.

Note: these stitch counts are optional, you may work your vertical stripes as close or as far apart as you’d like.  For my dishcloth, I worked 3 double rows.

Edging (worked in rounds):

With colour A, join with a sl st in the top front corner of your cloth if it is not still attached.  With the right side facing:

Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 3 sc in the corner st, sc in each st and ch-1 sp across and work 3 sc in the next corner st, work 1 sc at the end of each row, 3 sc in the next corner st, sc in each st across, 3 sc in the next corner st, sc at the end of each row.  When you come to the 1st st, join with a sl st in the 1st st.

Fasten off, weave in your ends.
