Last week I introduced you to the Stepping Stone Stitch worked in rounds. This week we will learn how to crochet the stitch in rows!
And although the final result looks slightly different than when it is worked in rounds, the Stepping Stone crochet stitch pattern is just as beautiful!
I have worked the pattern in three different colours and I can’t help but think about what a beautiful blanket it would make.
The pattern, once that first row is complete, is an easy one row repeat and the pattern is reversible. I love the results!
The Materials:
For this tutorial today, I will be using a small amount of Heatherly by KnitPicks and WeCrochet in three colours. You are also able to work this stitch in a single colour or more. The Heatherly yarn is a medium/worsted weight yarn that is a wool blend. Along with my worsted weight yarn, I will also be working with a 5 mm (H/8) crochet hook.

Stepping Stone Stitch in Rows Crochet Pattern:
Stitches and Abbreviations:
Ch – Chain
Dc – Double Crochet
Lp – Loop
Rpt – Repeat
Sc – Single Crochet
Sk – Skip
Sl st – Slip stitch
Sp – Space
Yo – Yarn over
Pattern Notes:
This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial and it may be worked in one colour or many. I will be working this pattern in three colours labelled A, B, and C.
This pattern is written in American crochet terms.
To begin, make a slip knot and make a foundation chain. For this stitch pattern, you will need a multiple of four chains, plus two for your foundation chain.
Your chain three at the beginning of a row counts as a double crochet stitch which means that when you come to the turning ch-3 at the end of the row, be sure to work into it.
To begin, with colour A, ch 42
Row One:
Work 4 dc in the 5th ch from your hook, sk the next 3 sts, 4 dc in the next st; Rpt from * across until 1 st remains, dc in the final st… Switch to colour B. Ch 3, turn.
Row Two:
With colour B, sk the 1st 4 dc, *4 dc into the sp between the next 2 dc, sk the next 4 dc; Rpt from * across ending with a dc in the final ch-3 sp. Switch to colour C. Ch 3, turn.
Row Three:
With colour C, sk the 1st 4 dc, *4 dc into the sp between the next 2 dc, sk the next 4 dc; Rpt from * across ending with a dc in the final ch-3 sp. Switch to colour A. Ch 3, turn.
Row Four:
With colour A, sk the 1st 4 dc, *4 dc into the sp between the next 2 dc, sk the next 4 dc; Rpt from * across ending with a dc in the final ch-3 sp. Switch to colour B. Ch 3, turn.
And that’s it!
For the rest of the pattern simply repeat rows 2-4. Fasten off, weave in your ends.
