The Stepping Stone Stitch in Rounds crochet pattern is a wonderful one round repeat that is eye-catching when worked in multiple colours!
If you follow multiple crochet groups on social media, you may have come across an eye-catching stitch recently that no one seemed to have the pattern for. Unfortunately the crochet stitch pattern in the photo was AI generated which explained why the written instructions were difficult to be found.
I was intrigued by the pattern and decided to give it a try to see if I could replicate it, or something similar. I believe, with this Stepping Stone Stitch in a Round, I have come close!
This stitch pattern is a one-round repeat that I have decided to work in three different colours. In my sample below, I keep the colours attached while they are not infuse and carry them up along the inside. This may work in some projects, but in others you may find that you have to fasten off at the end of each colour change and weave in your ends.
One thing many commentators noted in the original generated image, was that the “stitches” were always shown on the front side. So in order to create this look, I have worked the stitch in a round so that the stitches were always heading the same direction.
When worked in rows, the pattern came out quite differently. So, stay tuned, next week I will be sharing how to work the Stepping Stone Stitch in rows.
The Materials:
For this tutorial today, I will be using a small amount of Heatherly by KnitPicks and WeCrochet in three colours. You are also able to work this stitch in a single colour or more. The Heatherly yarn is a medium/worsted weight yarn that is a wool blend. Along with my worsted weight yarn, I will also be working with a 5 mm (H/8) crochet hook.

Stepping Stone Stitch in the Round Crochet Pattern
Stitches and Abbreviations:
Ch – Chain
Dc – Double Crochet
Lp – Loop
Rpt – Repeat
Sc – Single Crochet
Sk – Skip
Sl st – Slip stitch
Sp – Space
Yo – Yarn over
Pattern Notes:
This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial and it may be worked in one colour or many. I will be working this pattern in three colours labelled A, B, and C.
This pattern is written in American crochet terms.
To begin, make a slip knot and make a foundation chain. For this stitch pattern, you will need a multiple of four chains for your foundation chain.
Your chain three at the beginning of a row counts as a double crochet stitch which means that when you come to the turning ch-3 at the end of the row, be sure to work into it.
To begin, with colour A, ch 40, being careful not to twist the chain, join with a sl st in the 1st st.
Round One:
Ch 3 (counts as a dc here and throughout), dc in the same st as joining, *sk the next 3 chs, 4 dc in the next st; Rpt from * around, 2 dc in the 1st st. Join with a sl st in the top of the starting ch-3, sl st into the next sp between the ch-3 and next dc. Switch to colour B. Ch 3, do NOT turn.
Round Two:
With colour B, dc in the same sp as the starting ch 3, *sk the next 4 dc sts, 4 dc in the next sp (this is between the 3rd and 4th dc in the set below); Rpt from * around, 2 dc in the 1st st. Join with a sl st in the top of the starting ch-3, sl st into the next sp between the ch-3 and next dc. Switch to colour C. Ch 3, do NOT turn.
Round Three:
With colour C, dc in the same sp as the starting ch 3, *sk the next 4 dc sts, 4 dc in the next sp (this is between the 3rd and 4th dc in the set below); Rpt from * around, 2 dc in the 1st st. Join with a sl st in the top of the starting ch-3, sl st into the next sp between the ch-3 and next dc. Switch to colour A. Ch 3, do NOT turn.
Round Four:
With colour A, dc in the same sp as the starting ch 3, *sk the next 4 dc sts, 4 dc in the next sp (this is between the 3rd and 4th dc in the set below); Rpt from * around, 2 dc in the 1st st. Join with a sl st in the top of the starting ch-3, sl st into the next sp between the ch-3 and next dc. Switch to colour B. Ch 3, do NOT turn.
And that’s it!
For the rest of the pattern, repeat rnds 2-4. Fasten off, weave in your ends.
