This Favourite Hair Scrunchy crochet pattern is so easy! At only two rounds, it is fun to make and a quick gift for family and friends!
I noticed this year at the start of back to school, that hair scrunchies are back in! Maybe they have never gone out of style! One of my children is at the age now when they love to tie their hair back and have it look pretty! Not too long ago they asked if I could crochet them hair scrunchies for them… and all of their friends! So here we are!
In creating the pattern I tried a couple of different methods of making the scrunchy but in the end decided that simple is best. It meant that I could make several scrunchies in different colours in a relatively short amount of time! And the ruffles created in the stitch pattern create a beautiful bow when worn.
This Favourite Hair Scrunchy is only two rounds. The first round is worked around a hair elastic, I chose an “ouchless” thick one for my child’s thicker hair. I decided to work them in the Lion Brand Truboo yarn because of the wide array of colours, the silky smooth feel and the beautiful sheen to it. It really makes for a pretty hair scrunchy! The Truboo yarn is a light weight yarn so you will only need a 4mm crochet hook.

Favourite Hair Scrunchy Crochet Pattern:
Skill Level: Beginner
Gauge: N/A
Finished Size: Approximately 3.5 inches in diameter
Yarn: Truboo by Lion Brand® (241 yds/220 m; 100g/3.5 oz; 100% Rayon from Bamboo; (3) light weight). You will only need about 20 yards
Hook: Size G/6 (4 mm) hook.
Notions: Yarn needle, hair elastic
Stitches and Abbreviations:
Ch – Chain
Rpt – Repeat
Sc – Single Crochet
Sk – Skip
Sl st – Slip stitch
Tr – Triple Stitch
Yo – Yarn over
Pattern Notes:
- Pattern is written in American English terms.
- Pattern is worked in rounds.
- Ch 1 at beginning of round does not count as stitch.
- Weave in ends as needed.
- Do not turn.
Free Crochet Pattern:
Working around the hair elastic, join yarn with a sl st.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 60 sc into the centre and around the hair elastic. Join with a sl st in the 1st st.
Rnd 2: Ch 4 (Counts as a tr st), work 3 tr into the same st as joining, *4 tr in the next st; Rpt from * around, join with a sl st in the top of the starting ch-4. (240 sts)
Fasten off, weave in your ends.
