The Cabled Clusters crochet pattern is a great choice for when you a looking for a thick, tough texture for a project.
I love crochet cable patterns. They can add a lot of depth and dimension to a crochet pattern. Typically I work these projects using front post double or triple crochet stitches.
Today, in our Cabled Clusters crochet pattern, we will substitute these simple front post stitches for front post cables. As hinted above, cluster stitches make the cable extra thick and stiff. This is going to make it great for those projects such as bags, hot pads and pot holders.

The Materials:
For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of the Basic Stitch Anti Pilling yarn by Lion Brand in one colour. It is a soft worsted weight 100% acrylic yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm Furls Metal Streamline Hook in the colour Blush. You may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.
Thank you so much for stopping by! If you enjoy the tutorial below, be sure also to check out some of the many other crochet stitch tutorials on my site and pin this for later! You may wish to start with the Ice Cream Stitch | How to Crochet.
Stitches and Abbreviations:
Ch – Chain Stitch
FpCL – Front Post Cluster Stitch ([Yo, bring your hook in front of your work, insert your hook around the post of the stitch indicated from front, around back and out through the front again, yo and draw up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops] twice. Yo and draw through all the loops on your hook. Front Post Cluster Stitch made.)
Rpt – Repeat
Sc – Single Crochet Stitch
Sl St – Slip Stitch
Yo – Yarn Over
Pattern Notes:
This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial and it may be worked in one colour or many. I will be working this pattern in a single colour.
This pattern is written using American crochet terms.
To begin make a slip knot and make a foundation chain. For this stitch you will need a multiple of two stitches for your foundation chain.
For example, with colour A, ch 34.
Row One:
Sc in the 2nd ch from your hook and each across, ch 1, turn.
Row Two:
Sc in the 1st st and in each across, ch 1, turn.
Row Three:
Sc in the 1st st, *fpCL around the next st 2 rows below, sc in the next st; Rpt from * across. Ch 1, turn.
And that’s it!
For the rest of the pattern simply repeat rows two and three being sure to work your front post cluster stitches around the post of the cluster stitches below. Fasten off, weave in your ends.

the written pattern is not the same as the video, in the written it doesn’t say to YO 2 sts.
In your description of the Front Post Cluster Stitch, you omitted part of the instruction (as it was shown in the video).
The FpCL should read as follows: FpCL – Front Post Cluster Stitch ([Yo, bring your hook in front of your work, insert your hook around the post of the stitch indicated from front, around back and out through the front again, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops] twice. Yo and draw through all three loops on your hook. Front Post Cluster Stitch made.)
I added “yo and draw through 2 loops” and the mention of “all three loops”
