Add some festive cheer to your home or that of a loved one with this cute Melted Snowman Coaster crochet pattern!

I have something a little different for you today! This year I wanted to add a few more festive items to my indoor decorating for the holiday season. I am often scrambling to find enough holiday coasters and mug rugs so decided on making these adorable Melted Snowman coasters.

This crochet pattern is super simple and easy to work. I have used a similar base to the coater that I designed years ago, the Country Coasters.

The Melted Snowman coaster crochet pattern is worked first by creating a base which features half double crochet stitches worked in the 3rd loop. This creates a fun texture. You will then use scraps of yarn to create the accessories for your snowman including a hat and carrot nose.

For the eyes I simply worked a French knot.

Materials to make your crochet coasters:

For this project I kept the materials simple – even used some smaller yarn scraps that I had on hand! I love to make my crochet coasters with cotton yarn. It is strong and holds up well to lots of heat. It is also absorbent in case there are spills!

For the accessories on my Melted Snowman coaster I mostly used cotton, but as I didn’t have any orange cotton on hand, I opted to use a little acrylic yarn for my carrot nose instead. Feel free to mix and match as well!

Rnd 6: Working in the 3rd loop around, *hdc in each of the next 4 sts, 2 hdc in the next st; Rpt from * around.  (48 sts)

Rnd 7: Working in the 3rd loop around, *sc in each of the next 5 sts, 2 sc in the next st; Rpt from * around.  Join with a sl st in the top of the 1st st.  (56 sts)

Fasten off, weave in your ends.

Hat (worked in rows):

With colour B (Black), ch 9

Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each st across.  Ch 1, turn. (8 sc)

Row 2: Sc in the 1st st and in each st across.  Ch 1, turn.

Row 3: Sl st into the 1st st, switch to colour C, with colour C and working over the non-working colour B yarn, sc in each of the next 6 sts.  Switch back to colour B, fasten off colour A.  Ch 1, turn.

Row 4: With colour B, sc in the 1st st and each of the next 5 sts.  Ch 1, turn.

Row 5: Sc in the 1st st and each of the next 5 sts.

Fasten off leaving a long tail. Weave in ends.  Using the long tail, sew the hat onto the mug rug base using the photo as a guide.

Nose:

With colour D, ch 5.

Row 1: Sl st in the 2nd ch from your hook, sc in each of the next 3 sts.

Fasten off leaving a long tail.  Using the long tail, sew the carrot nose in place using the photo as a guide.

Eyes and Nose:

Using a little bit of colour B (black), make two French knots in the position of the eyes.  Embroider the mouth in place using a back stitch.  I worked mine in the top of the ridges of round 4.

To work a French knot: From the back, pull your needle up through the fabric with a small piece of black yarn.  Holding the needle above and across the fabric, wrap the yarn 2-3 times around the needle.  Being careful to not allow the yarn to unwrap, gentle push the needle back down through the fabric in the same place (or very close to it!) where you drew the needle up.  Gentle pull the yarn back through until only the small knot remains on the top of the fabric.
