The Leaf Hopper Stitch is a fun crochet stitch! It features a lot of texture and is a stitch that works up quickly once you get the hang of the pattern repeat.

I love stitches with texture! And this stitch gets its name from the cluster stitches that look like falling leaves.  They dance across the fabric!

Materials:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Cotton Aran by Paintbox Yarns. It is an aran weight yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm Clover Armor Hook. However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.

Be sure to check out the free video tutorial that can be found at the end of the written pattern!

The Leaf Hopper Stitch:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.

To begin, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you will need to chain a multiple of four stitches plus three for your foundation chain.

Row One:

Double crochet into the fourth chain from your hook and into each chain stitch across.

Chain three and turn your work.  The starting chain three counts as a double crochet stitch.

Row Two:

Skip the first stitch (at the base of your turning chain), double crochet into the next stitch, *leaf hopper cluster over the next stitch.

To work the leaf hopper cluster: Yarn over, insert your hook around the post of the stitch directly below the last double crochet stitch worked, yarn over and draw up a loop.  Again, working around the same stitch, yarn over, insert your hook around the post of the same stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop.  Yarn over and pull through four loops on your hook.

Next, skip the next double crochet in the row below and repeat:Yarn over, insert your hook around the post of the next stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop.  Again, working around the same stitch, yarn over, insert your hook around the post of the same stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop.  Yarn over and pull through four loops on your hook.

Finally, yarn over and draw through all three loops on your hook.  The leaf hopper cluster stitch is made.

Double Crochet in each of the next three stitches.

Repeat from * across to the final two stitches, double crochet in the final two stitches.

Chain three and turn your work.

Row Three:

Double Crochet into the next stitch and into each stitch across.

Chain three and turn your work.

Row Four:

*Double crochet into each of the next three stitches, leaf hopper cluster over the next stitch.

Repeat from * across ending with one double crochet in each of the last four stitches.

Chain three and turn your work.

Row Five:

Repeat row three.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern, repeat rows two to five.  Fasten off and weave in your ends.
