The Moon Stitch crochet pattern is a wonderfully easy and versatile stitch! It’s not too heavy on the texture and is unique looking.
The moon stitch crochet pattern is one that can be used in a variety of different projects as it can be used with any multiple of stitches. The design in the stitch pattern reminds me of little bouillon stitches, but they are so much easier to work. Working a single crochet row in-between the moon stitch rows ensures that all of the texture is to the one side. I look forward to hearing what you think!

Materials for this Tutorial:
For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of the Basic Stitch Anti Pilling yarn by Lion Brand. It is a soft worsted weight 100% acrylic yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm Birchwood Crochet Hook by Rowan Yarn – one of my favourites! However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.
Thank you so much for stopping by! If you enjoy the tutorial below, be sure to also check out some of the many other crochet stitch tutorials on my site and pin this for later! You may wish to start with the Terrain Stitch | How to Crochet.
Moon Stitch Crochet Pattern:
Stitches and Abbreviations:
Ch – Chain Stitch
Moon St – Moon Stitch (Yo twice, insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop, yo drawing through all loops on hook. Stitch Made)
Rpt – Repeat
Sc – Single Crochet Stitch
Sl St – Slip Stitch
Yo – Yarn Over
Pattern Notes:
This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial and it may be worked in one colour or many. I will be working this pattern in a solid colour.
I will be using American crochet terms.
To begin make a slip knot and make a foundation chain. For this stitch you may use any multiple of stitches for your foundation chain.
For example, ch 21.
Row One:
Sc in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each ch across. Ch 2 (does not count as a st), turn.
Row Two:
In the first st and in each st across work 1 moon st (Yo twice, insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop, yo drawing through all loops on hook). Ch 1, turn.
Row Three:
Sc in the 1st st and in each across. Ch 2, turn.
And that’s it!
For the rest of the pattern simply repeat rows two and three. Fasten off, weave in your ends.
