The Fan and Popcorn Stitch is a lacy crochet stitch with a pop of texture!

This easy crochet stitch features rows of double crochet fan stitches that are paired with the popular popcorn stitch.

This pattern is a lace design with lots of stability.  The popcorn stitches provide a texture that is found on only one side of the fabric.

I can see this Fan and Popcorn Stitch being used in a variety of designs including blankets, baby blankets and summer lacy cardigans.  If you have used this stitch, you can let me know how in the comments below!

crochet fan and popcorn stitch show in purple yarn

Materials:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Cotton Aran by Paintbox Yarns. It is an aran weight yarn. The hook shown here and in the video below is a wooden streamline hook by Furls Crochet. However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.

The Fan and Popcorn Stitch:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.

To begin, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you will need to chain a multiple of eight stitches plus two for your foundation chain.

Row One:

Work one single crochet into the second chain from your hook, * chain one, skip the next three chains, double crochet into the next chain, chain one.

Into the same chain as the last double crochet, work one double crochet, one chain one and one more double crochet.

Chain one, skip the next three chains, single crochet into the next chain.

Repeat from * across to the end.  Turn.

Row Two:

Chain six (this counts as a double crochet and a chain three), skip the next double crochet and single crochet into the next double crochet.

*Chain three and work one popcorn into the next single crochet.

To work your popcorn stitch, work 4 double crochet stitches into the stitch indicated, remove hook from loop and insert your hook from the front into the top of the first double crochet stitch.  Pick up the dropped loop and draw it through the double crochet.  Chain one.

Chain three, skip the next double crochet, single crochet into the next double crochet.

Repeat from * across to the final single crochet, chain three and double crochet into the last single crochet.  Turn.

Row Three:

Chain one, single crochet into the first double crochet, * chain one, double crochet into the next single crochet, chain one.

Into the same stitch as the last double crochet, work one double crochet, chain one, double crochet.

Chain one, single crochet in the top of the next popcorn stitch.

Repeat from * across to the end working the last single crochet into the third chain of the starting chain six.  Turn.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern repeat rows two and three.  Fasten off and weave in your ends.
