The Half Double Crochet Mesh stitch has a grid like appearance.  The stitches and spaces are a bit more pronounced than that of the single crochet mesh stitch.

The Half Double Crochet Mesh stitch is made up of half double crochet and chain stitches.  For this reason it is an easy crochet stitch to work.  The resulting fabric is open and lacy.

This stitch is versatile when you comes to its use.  You may wish to use it in a variety of projects ranging from blankets to lacy cardigans, table cloths or market bags.

Materials:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of Cotton Aran by Paintbox Yarns. It is an aran weight yarn. The hook shown here and in the video below is a wooden streamline hook by Furls Crochet. However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.

The Half Double Crochet Mesh Stitch:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.  At the end of each row you will need to chain one and turn your work. The chain three will count as a half double crochet stitch and chain one.

To begin, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains.  For this stitch pattern you will need an even number of stitches for your foundation chain.

For my swatch I will be making a foundation chain of 20 chain stitches.

Row One:

Half Double crochet into the second chain from your hook, * chain one, skip the next stitch, half double crochet into the next stitch.

Repeat from * across.  Chain three and turn your work.

Row Two:

Skip the first chain one space, half double crochet in the next stitch, *chain one, skip the next chain one space, half double crochet in the next single crochet stitch.

Repeat from * across to the end.

Chain three and turn your work.

Row Three:

Skip the first chain one space, half double crochet in the next stitch, *chain one, skip the next chain one space, half double crochet in the next single crochet stitch.

Repeat from * across to the starting chain three, skip the next chain stitch, half double crochet into the next chain.

Chain three and turn your work.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern, simply repeat row three.  Fasten off and weave in your ends.
