The Ladder Stitch crochet pattern is a simple crochet stitch pattern featuring single crochet stitches and chain stitches.

This versatile crochet stitch is easy to work and can be worked in a simple colour or multiple colours. To make it easy to change colour and not have to fasten off at the end of each row, I have worked the pattern in three different colours that I carry up the side when they are not in use.

You may use the Ladder Stitch crochet pattern in a variety of projects such as blankets, crochet tops and bags, it really is a wonderful stitch to work!

Materials for this Tutorial:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of cotton yarn. This yarn is a worsted weight yarn called Pima Cotton by Lion Brand Yarn. I will also be using a 5 mm crochet hook. The hook you will see me using in the video tutorial below is a Clover Soft Touch Hook.

Thank you so much for stopping by! If you enjoy learning new crochet stitches, you will find many more in the “Crochet Stitches” category here on Rich Textures Crochet, or you may wish to check out the Wide Cone Stitch. I update this website with a new crochet stitch every week!

Ladder Stitch Crochet Pattern

Stitches and Abbreviations:

Ch – Chain Stitch

Dc – Double Crochet

Rpt – Repeat

Sc – Single Crochet

Sk – Skip

Sl St – Slip Stitch

Yo – Yarn Over

Notes:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial. You may work it in one colour or many. I will be working the stitch using three colours.

To begin, make a slip know and then a foundation chain. For your foundation chain you will need a multiple of five stitches plus three for your foundation chain (5 + 3 stitches).

For example, with colour A, ch 28.

Row One:

Sc in the 2nd ch from your hook, sc in the next st, *Ch 3, sk the next 3 chs, sc in each of the next 2 sts; Rpt from * across. Switch to colour B in the final st. Ch 1, turn.

Row Two:

With colour B, sc in each of the 1st 2 sts, *ch 3, sk the next ch-3, sc in each of the next 2 sts; Rpt from * across. Change to colour C in the final st. Ch 1, turn.

Row Three:

With colour C, sc in each of the 1st 2 sts, *ch 3, sk the next ch-3, sc in each of the next 2 sts; Rpt from * across. Change to colour A in the final st. Ch 1, turn.

Row Four:

With colour A, sc in each of the 1st 2 sts, *ch 3, sk the next ch-3, sc in each of the next 2 sts; Rpt from * across. Change to colour B in the final st. Ch 1, turn.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern simply repeat rows 2-4 for as long as you would like. Fasten off, weave in your ends.
