Work up the colourful Charlottetown Cowl crochet pattern in a luxurious alpaca yarn to go with your Charlottetown Beanie!

You may have heard that this past fall I travelled to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada to teach workshops at their annual fibre festival. While there I picked up some gorgeous alpaca yarn from Green Gable Alpacas.

It was my first time working with 100% alpaca yarn and I immediately fell in love. It’s very soft, warm and comes in an array of beautiful colours.

While in Charlottetown I designed what I now call the Charlottetown Beanie and Cowl set which feature beautiful colours and texture.

The two accessories make such a beautiful and warm winter set. You can work them in a variety of colours as you see here, or in a single colour. Any option would be beautiful!

I mentioned in the post about the matching crochet hat, that when choosing the yarn I went with colours from Green Gable Alpaca that I thought went well together. As a result I picked up a couple skeins that were pure Alpaca and a couple that were blended with wool. All were worsted weight and crocheted well together.

Each skein of yarn had between 165 and 200 yards of yarn. Three skeins (one in each colour) is enough to make both the hat and the cowl, as long as you mix up the colour order between the hat and cowl. To make the set therefore only required about 500 yards in total. You may certainly substitute the yarn for another fibre, simply look for a worsted or medium weight.

How to work the Charlottetown Cowl Crochet Pattern:

The Charlottetown Cowl is worked from the bottom up and sized to fit an adult/teen. You will begin with your colour A by working some double crochet ribbing. As you move into the body of the cowl you will work the texture alternating between your colours every two rows. To finish off the cowl, you will once again work a double crochet ribbing in your starting colour. It is quite simple to work and will work up quite quickly!
