You will love playing with colour and texture in this beautiful Charlottetown Beanie crochet pattern!

This past fall I had the opportunity to travel to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada for their annual fibre festival. While there I led a few crochet workshops, met some wonderful people and enjoyed shopping at the fibre market.

One of the items I picked up at the market was some beautiful Alpaca and Alpaca/Merino blend yarn from Green Gable Alpacas.

Located on beautiful Prince Edward Island, Green Gable Alpacas produces high quality alpaca and alpaca blended yarn in an array of stunning colours. After picking up a few skeins to try and feeling how wonderfully soft it was, I knew I wanted to make a winter set.

While in Prince Edward Island I first designed the Charlottetown Cowl (available soon!) and then this beanie!

When choosing the yarn I went with colours from Green Gable Alpaca that I thought went well together. As a result I picked up a couple skeins that were pure Alpaca and a couple that were blended with wool. All were worsted weight and crocheted well together.

One thing to note when working with Alpaca yarn, is that pure alpaca does tend to shed a little bit. I did not mind it, however it is one thing to be aware of. The alpaca that was blended with the wool shed much less.

The crochet Barn Quilt Blankets crochet pattern book laying over a crochet blanket

If you enjoy working crochet blankets, I invite you to check out my book: Barn Quilt Blankets! It is a collection of five blanket crochet patterns that feature a beautiful geometric designs. The book is now available in both paperback and ebook formats on Amazon! You can read about it here: BARN QUILT BLANKETS

Each skein of yarn had between 165 and 200 yards of yarn in them. Three skeins (one in each colour) is enough to make both the hat and the cowl, as long as you mix up the colour order between the hat and cowl. To make the set therefore only required about 500 yards in total.

You may certainly substitute the yarn for another fibre, simply look for a worsted or medium weight.

Our hat today is worked from the brim up to the top and is sized to fit an adult head although I will provide the multiples below should you wish to change the size.

The pattern uses a variation of a twisted granny stitch. I love the texture in this stitch and it’s fairly straightforward to work up. I know you’ll love it!

The hat can be worn with a pompom or without. For my hat I used a little bit of the leftover yarn to make a pompom and I think it tied it all in quite nicely.

Pattern Notes:

  • Pattern is written in American English terms.
  • Pattern is worked in rounds.
  • Ch 1 at beginning of round does not count as stitch.
  • Weave in ends as needed.
  • Turn at the end of rounds ONLY AS INDICATED.
  • Hat may be worn with a pompom or without.
  • When changing colours, in the stitch prior to the colour change, drop the colour in use before completing the stitch, place the new colour on your hook and draw through the final two loops on your hook.  Then continue working with the new colour.
  • For this pattern I like to gently carry the non working yarn up the inside of the hat.  Alternatively you may fasten off at the end of each colour change and weave in your ends as you go.
  • To change the size of your hat you may use any multiple of stitches for the brim and will need a multiple of 4 stitches for the first round of your hat body.
