I love the unique look of the Cabbage Stitch crochet pattern! I may just be the right stitch for your next project!

The Cabbage Stitch is one that has been around for a while! It features a unique texture that is eye catching.

The pattern is fairly easy to work as a two row repeat. It’s created by working clusters of double crochet stitches and then locking them in with crossed double crochet stitches worked in the spaces in between.

As you can see below, I have worked the pattern in a single colour, however it would also look interesting in multiple.

While the texture and design is mostly to the front, don’t let it keep you from trying it in larger reversible projects like blankets and shawls.

The Materials:

For this tutorial today, I will be using a small amount of Heatherly by KnitPicks and WeCrochet in a single colour. You are also able to work this stitch in a single colour or more. The Heatherly yarn is a medium/worsted weight yarn that is a wool blend. Along with my worsted weight yarn, I will also be working with a 5 mm (H/8) crochet hook.

Stitches and Abbreviations:

Ch – Chain
Dc – Double Crochet
Rpt – Repeat
Sk – Skip
Sl st – Slip stitch
Sp – Space
Yo – Yarn over

Pattern Notes:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial and it may be worked in one colour or many. I will be working this pattern in a single colour.

This pattern is written in American crochet terms.

The turning ch does not count as a stitch.

To begin, make a slip knot and make a foundation chain. For this stitch pattern, you will need a multiple if four stitches, plus three (4 + 3) stitches for your foundation chain.

For example, ch 31.

Row One:

4 dc in the 5th ch from your hook, *sk the next 3 sts, 4 dc in the next ch; Rpt from * across until 2 chs remain, sk the next ch, dc in the final ch. Ch 3 (counts as a dc here and throughout), turn.

Row Two:

Sk the 1st 4 sts, dc in the next st, ch 2, working in behind the dc and ch-2 just worked dc back into the 2nd skipped st, *sk the next 3 sts, dc in the next st, ch 2, working in behind the dc and ch-s just worked, dc in the 1st sk st; Rpt from * across until your starting ch remains, dc in the top of the turning ch. Ch 3, turn.

Row Three:

*4 dc in the next ch-2 sp; Rpt from * across to the final st, dc in the top of your turning ch. Ch 3, turn.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern simply repeat rows two and three. Fasten off, weave in your ends.
