The basketweave crochet stitch is a timeless crochet stitch that is loved by many – and it creates a gorgeous hat in this Basketweave Beanie crochet pattern!

The Basketweave stitch is a great stitch at creating texture. It can be worked as big squares as you will see in this crochet hat. Or it can be modified into little squares as you can see in the Drew Beanie crochet pattern. Both ways showcase a wonderful texture!

How to make a crochet hat:

This crochet hat pattern, like most of the hat patterns here on Rich Textures Crochet is worked from the brim of the hat to the top.

I prefer to work my crochet hat brims in slip stitches. I love the knit look, it has a lot of spring to it and I find the slip stitches text to keep their shape. But if you are not fond of slip stitch brims (they can be a challenge to work), the slip stitches can be easily swapped for single crochet stitches or half double crochet.

Once the brim is worked, you will continue into the body of the hat before starting the decreases for the top. The crochet pattern below is sized to fit an adult, but I’ll give you some instruction below should you wish to change the size. If wanting to change the size you will find to following sizing chart helpful!

What kind of yarn should I use for a crochet beanie?

The yarn you use is really up to personal preference. Personally, as I live in a colder climate (Canada) during the winter months I will often for a wool or a wool blend yarn for my crochet hats. I love the warmth that wool provides and that it repels moisture. I’m also one of those odd people who don’t mind, and even enjoys the feel of wool.

Really though, all that matters for this hat is that you select a worsted/medium weight yarn. In the photos and in the video tutorial below you will see me using a yarn called Heatherly by KnitPicks and WeCrochet. It is a wool blend yarn that is unbelievably soft!
