It’s that time of year again: Time for the Marvellous Market Bag Crochet Along on Rich Textures Crochet!
Every year as spring approaches in North America I look forward to bringing out my lighter and more summery bags suitable for the warmer weather. I also look forward to adding some fresh ones to my collection and to making them for family and friends!
I have found over the past few years that market bags are great, short projects for trying out new stitches. They are practical, pretty, quick to work and also a great way to use up cotton yarn scarps. So get your cotton yarn and hooks ready, I have five NEW crochet market bag patterns that I look forward to bringing to you throughout the month of May!

How it works:
Beginning May 3rd, 2023 I will release one new crochet market bag pattern each week for five weeks. The patterns (including the written and video tutorials) will be posted on the Wednesdays at 9am EST.
The schedule will be as follows:
- Wednesday, May 3rd: Daisy Market Bag
- Wednesday, May 10th: Summertime Market Bag
- Wednesday, May 17th: On Trend Market Bag
- Wednesday, May 24th: Bay Window Market Bag
- Wednesday, May 31st: Carefree Market Bag
The pattern will be posted FOR FREE in written form here on my blog. A full video tutorial will also be posted here and to my YouTube channel. As well each week, for those who wish I will make a PDF available that can be purchased from my Etsy and Ravelry Shops. All of the patterns will be free here on my blog and YouTube Channel and will forever remain free here even after the crochet along has ended.
The Patterns:
Each crochet market bag features a similar construction and is worked as one piece from the bottom and into the continuous handles. Each bag also features a variety of crochet stitch patterns, they range in difficulty from easy to intermediate.
Do not be afraid to try the more challenging designs, as you will have a video tutorial and a community to help you along the way!
Each bag is worked from the bottom up and I have worked each one using two to three different colours, however you may use as many or as few as you would like. Once again, if you have some cotton scraps lying around, this is a great way to use them up!
The Materials:
To work the market bags you will need a 4 mm (G/6) crochet hook. I will be using a Birch Wood Crochet Hook by Rowan Yarns. These hooks have a metal tip with a beautiful, smooth wooden handle.
Each of the crochet market bags is worked in a 100% worsted weight cotton yarn. I will be using the 24/7 Cotton by Lion Brand (Lion Brand®; 186 yds/170m; 3.5 oz/100g; 100% cotton; medium/worsted weight). However you can use a worsted weight cotton of your choice. Another option would be the Bernat Handicrafter Cotton by Yarnspirations.
My colours and approximate yardage for each bag is as follows:
- Week One: You will need approximately 795 yards in total. I will be using 3 different colours: Approximately 50 yards of Lemon, 2 balls of Sky, 2 balls of white.
- Week Two: You will need approximately 930 yards in total. I will be using 3 different colours: Approximately 1 ball White, 2 balls Aqua, 2 balls Ecru.
- Week Three: You will need approximately 930 yards in total. I will be using 3 different colours: Approximately 2 balls of Denim, 2 balls Silver, 1 ball of Sky.
- Week Four: You will need approximately 745 yards in total. I will be using 3 different colours: Approximately 1 ball of White, 1 ball of Silver, 2 balls of Denim.
- Week Five: You will need approximately 745 yards in total. I will be using 3 different colours: Approximately 2 balls of Purple, 1 ball of Aqua, 1 ball of ecru.
Along with your yarn and hook you will also need a pair of scissors and a yarn needle for finishing off.

There is no official sign up list for this crochet along! However, there are several ways you can connect and interact.
