The Alpine Crochet Stitch pattern is another one of those beloved, classical stitch patterns that everyone should have in their repertoire.

It’s irresistible because of its beautiful texture that I have had described to me as “little spruce trees.” The Alpine Stitch is a popular stitch to use in blankets, cardigans and hats because of its warmth.

As for the make up of the stitch pattern, it is a pattern that repeats itself over four rows. The textured rows are fairly easy to remember and then each textured row set in between a return row of single crochet stitches. It really is not that difficult to work as you will see in the written pattern and video tutorial below.

Materials for this Tutorial:

For this tutorial today I will be using a small amount of the Basic Stitch Anti Pilling yarn by Lion Brand. It is a soft worsted weight 100% acrylic yarn. The hook shown in the video below is a 5 mm Birchwood Crochet Hook by Rowan Yarn – one of my favourites!  However you may use any hook and yarn combination you choose.

Thank you so much for stopping by! If you enjoy the tutorial below, be sure to also check out some of the many other crochet stitch tutorials on my site and pin this for later! You may wish to start with the Elizabeth Stitch | How to Crochet.

Alpine Stitch Crochet Pattern:

Stitches and Abbreviations:

Ch – Chain Stitch
Dc – Double Crochet
Fpdc – Front Post Double Crochet
Rpt – Repeat
Sc – Single Crochet Stitch
Sl St – Slip Stitch
Yo – Yarn Over

Pattern Notes:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial and it may be worked in one colour or many. I will be working this pattern in a single colour.

This pattern is written using American crochet terms.

To begin make a slip knot and make a foundation chain. For this stitch you will need an odd number of stitches for your foundation chain.

For example, ch 33.

Row One:

Dc in the 4th ch from your hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.

Row Two:

Sc in the 1st st and in each st across. Ch 3 (counts as a dc), turn.

Row Three:

*Fpdc around the post of the next dc 2 rows below, dc in the next st of the previous row (skipping the sc in behind the fpdc just worked); Rpt from * across to the final st, dc in the final st. Ch 1, turn.

Row Four:

Sc in the 1st st and in each st across. Ch 3, turn.

Row Five:

Dc in the next st, *fpdc around the post of the next dc 2 rows below, dc in the next st of the previous row; Rpt from * across, dc in the final st. Ch 1, turn.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern simply repeat rows 1-5 for the pattern. Fasten off, weave in your ends.
